Life at Ashley Manor, Vancouver Washington

Our new subdivision, Ashley Manor, is located in Vancouver Washington just 3 ½ blocks away from the 2008 Clark County Parade of Homes. The Clark County Parade of Homes will be open from 8/22 thru 9/7/2008. In an effort to capitalize on Vancouver Washington's biggest real estate event of the year, we have been holding the model home at Ashley Manor open the same days as the Parade.

During yesterday's shift at Ashley Manor I received two visitors, Bette and Bill. Both in their mid 80's (of course Bette is quick to point out that she is younger by 4 years.) they have living in the neighborhood since 1970 and were a wealth of knowledge about the neighbors and the area. They took their time as they toured the home. Bette was the first into each of the rooms and made it her job to be certain that Bill didn't miss any of the details. From the hand shaved floors to the appliances to the travertine tile in the bathrooms, she didn't miss a trick. She would make a great realtor! She picked up on all the hot selling points and patiently explained them to her husband. It was fun to watch.

The best part was when Bette pulled me aside to complain about the lot sizes in Ashley Manor. She lives on 1 ½ acres and these lots are only 10,000 to 12,000 sq. feet. She backed up against a wall in the office and started, "This sure is a beautiful house. I really love the way everything lays out and I LOVE that kitchen! But everyone is building new homes so close together."

This is when she started to press herself against the wall, as if she was sliding between two houses. She acted like she had something in her mouth and was swirling it around. With a spitting motion and a loud "PTOOEY!" she says, "Heck, I could spit from one house to the next and do you know what that means? It means that I am a pretty good spitter!" By this time, Bill is just rolling his eyes and I am not sure if I should be laughing or taking her complaint about the lot sizes seriously.

By the time they left, over an hour later, I knew the history of the entire neighborhood. Who moved in and when; any medical emergencies or ailments that were suffered; and who their kids were and where they moved to.

If it hadn't been for the senior special at "Skipper's," I think we might still be there talking. As they were leaving they told me that Skipper's has a special for seniors: one entrée, two sides, and a drink for $3.29. When I commented that it sounded like a great deal, Bette was sure to let me know that they just raised the price by 4 cents!
