I grew up along the Coastal Bend in South Texas and then lived in Houston and College Station for many years. I've been through Hurricanes Carla, Beulah, Camille, and Allen, and probably a couple that I just don't remember anymore, and certainly don't miss the annual threat from hurricanes and tornadoes. I prefer the daily threat of an earthquake, however unlikely they actually are to occur here.
I had a friend who lived in Aiken, South Carolina, when Hugo hit. He lost his home but made out well with the insurance money and moved to Baton Rouge and then back to Houston. All the family was in Texas, so they moved to be closer to them, not to get away from hurricanes, obviously.
