Some of you have said you like my old photos and I'm glad.  Some have said to give us the present to compare with the old.  I am doing that today.  First Security Bank used to look like the picture below.  It was added on and covered over many times during the years.  Now it is being restored to some of its former majesty.  It's on the court square and the first picture is courtesy of Paula, who took it as a photography project for the Girl Scouts in the 40's.

I like the way it is looking.

Do you mean to tell me the current 'movers and shakers' of Searcy (meaning bankers) have had a change of heart?  WHEN was this picture taken?  I don't think it was more than two weeks since I've passed by the former Security Bank, and it was still that tacky, awful concrete block structure.  When has this renovation occurred?  Miracles never cease!   I can't believe it, though, is this a mirage or some trick camera shot?  Are you shooting into the future?  Are you shooting straight with us who read and love your blog?  Fess up, Barbara.

Anita Fuller, you make me laugh.  Wish I were smart enough to do trick shots and shoot into the future.  I took this photo Sunday afternoon when downtown was practically empty.  I am impressed, too, with the look that it is taking on.  It appears to have a marble side now!

Karen Anne, the building does look good, doesn't it.  I too am amazed.  Perhaps they got an architect involved.  We are also into the Downtown program where you can get grants to restore old buildings.

Michael Thornton, as I just told Karen, our downtown is in the process of lots of restoration with grant money.

Ah, memories of living down town. When I was 7 and living with my grandparents, we lived in a house,

303 N. Main, that was at the tree end of the block where the Security Bank was located. There was

a Chinaberry tree near the sidewalk with limbs overhanging the walk. I remember sitting in that

tree and dropping berries down on unsuspecting pedestrians. What fun for a young boy.

 

The Acme Dry Cleaners bordered on the front yard and the steam pipes along the wall provided

a source of much enjoyment. On the other side of the house along Main, there was a cedar chest

shop owned by a Mr. Whisnant. I remember spending time there watching him work the fragrant

cedar wood into chests.

Don and Paula, thanks for that information about old Searcy.  Chinaberry trees were loved by kids and hated by parents because they were so messy!  You gave a good example of that and a good example of kids learning by watching.
