How many hours does your state require for education credits for renewals?

By

Some time ago I was surprised to find out that the state where my mom does business (Kansas) only requires 12 CE hours for their renewal period.  In Washington we are required to have at least 30 hours.  I typically bring in many more hours than are necessary and have ranged 53, 63, and 95 hours for the 3 renewal periods I've had so far.

I'm curious what the other states require.  Anyone out there want to share?

I've focused on acquiring specific educational elements to my background.  What are the focus of the hours you take?

My recent focused classes have been in the following topics:

Commercial/Investment real estate

"Green" or environmental focus

Forms classes

KY requires an embarassing 6 hours of CE / year.

Ok, so if they require 6 per year, then it's similar to KS with 12 per renewal period (2 years).  So, how many hours do you actually take for yourself?  Do you use this information to help set you apart from your competition that might sneak by with the bare minimum?

Wow, 30 hours seems like a lot compared to West Virginia's 7.5. Just like you, I average above the required hours just to learn more in these changing times.

California requires 45 hours every 4 years...so pretty close to yours per year (assuming your renewal period is every 4 years).

Yeah, 45, but I figured that getting my broker's license is just as expensive and I don't have to do the 45 credits, I just have to pass another test.  That is a good way to get around the education credits, at least for another 4 years.

Reba - This year, I plan to complete the ABR requirements so I'll end up with 30 or so.  Yes, I plan to use both the designation and the number of hours as a distinguishing factor

We're on the hood for 20 and it's not a hard number to exceed if you're really interested in the business.  I think I more than doubled it for my first renewal period.

WA requires 30 hours for each renewal, which is every 2 years.  So, that equates to 15 per year if you wanted to break it evenly between annual periods.  For the CA folks that means that you're doing about 11 hours per year, so close but a little less.  Still good though.  I can't believe your renewal periods are every 4 years though!

I spend some of my hours on designation courses to stand out in certain areas.  Currently held designations are ABR (Accredited Buyer's Representative), SRES (Senior Real Estate Specialist), AHS (Accredited Home-Staging Specialist) and I am also in the process of working on my CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member) and I am a candidate for the program.

My goal, besides attaining CCIM, in the next few years will be to also get a luxury home designation since my clients are starting to be more and more in the higher dollar ranges ($600k to $1.4M right now). I also am interested in the CIPS program for international exchanges.

unfortunately not enough. How about actual experience requirements? just because you can pass an open book exam every couple of years doesn't make you qualified to sell real estate.

Reba:

South Carolina licensees must accrue eight (8) hours of continuing education every two
years of which two (2) hours minimum must consist of core content.

Core Content classes include sessions on Contracts and Risk Management.

(p.s. - I'm a licensed instructor for the State. Feel free to ask me any of your South Carolina CE questions.)
