CIn this manual I have presented many ideas, techniques and strategies for building a successful career or business in mortgage lending.  However, none of this information is of any use without the missing element.

Before telling you what that missing element is let me tell you about a certain man.  When this man was young he decided to become an army officer.

He went to West Point where his performance was lack-luster and graduated 21st out of 39.  He had some success during military engagements but after a few years resigned because of disciplinary problems.

He tried his hand at farming and the real estate business and failed at both.  When the Civil War began he was working as a clerk in the family store that was run by his brothers.  He went back to the army as an enlistment officer.

But something set this officer apart and he began to rise through the ranks.  This man, Ulysses S. Grant,<!--[if supportFields]> <![endif]--><!--[if supportFields]> <![endif]--> eventually became the commander of all the Northern armies and after the war became the President of the United States.

What was different about this man?  Was he smarter?  Did he have some gift or incredible communication skills?  I don't think so.

The thing that made him stand out amidst the other Generals and that convinced Abraham Lincoln to place his trust in him was a simple characteristic that anybody can develop.

It was his ability to take action.

When other Generals were waiting until all the elements were in place and everything was just perfect Grant was out winning battles.

When there were difficult decisions to be made that would cost the lives of thousands of men Grant made the decision and got on with it.  When the opportunity was available to catch the enemy at a disadvantage Grant seized it whether he was completely prepared or not.

He realized that you could wait forever for everything to be just right and never accomplish anything.

Those who accomplish great things in this world are the ones who set theirs sights on something and do not accept no for an answer.

The reason some prosper (while most fail to achieve the object of their desires) is because they keep taking action, correcting course and taking action again.

They repeat this process and do not quit until they have succeeded.  They continue to fail while most other people fail to continue.  They fail until they have no other course left but success.

Some people call this failing forward fast.  Thomas Edison<!--[if supportFields]> <![endif]--> was a great example of this.

When his experiments failed to produce the desired result he did not look at this as a failure but instead he perceived this action as successfully learning another way not to do it and he continued trying alternatives until he found the course he was looking for.

Don't mistake this progressive persistence with stubbornness.  When Edison did not get the result he was looking for he didn't keep trying the same thing over and over again hoping for a different result.

He continually tried new things until he found the ones that worked.  Then he fully capitalized on that knowledge.

Another quality that we can learn from Edison is taking responsibility for your own education.  Edison
was one of the most prolific inventors and businessmen ever known yet he only had three weeks of formal schooling.

He did his homework and took responsibility for finding the education and knowledge that would serve him in his specific desires.

He knew that those who learn more earn more.  This is, of course, as long as they learn the correct and applicable knowledge they need and not just entertain themselves without ever applying that knowledge.

Successful people don't make excuses for themselves.  They learn and then do.

They listen to their heart and that small inner voice.  When flashes of inspiration come they take action as soon as possible knowing that an idea, like a small plant, must be nurtured until it grows and develops a life of its own.

At take off most airplanes will have to have their engines set at full 100% power.  Some even run at 110% of engineered specifications just to get off the ground.  Obviously if the engines were run like this for very long they would be damaged and the plane would not fly.

However, once a plane reaches a few thousand feet in altitude the pilot can start cutting back on the power.  Upon reaching cruising altitude the power is cut to just a trickle.  They have reached a point where their momentum does most the work with only a small amount of energy needed to keep going.

In fact, on a short hour long flight it is not unusual for an airplane to use more fuel in the first few minutes of takeoff than it uses during the rest of the entire flight.

So what's my point?

Simple.  Getting a career or a small business off the ground is no different.  It may take a great deal of time and effort at first.  Possibly even beyond what your engineered specifications may suggest.

But if that power is applied in the correct way getting educated, building systems and leveraging your resources you can quickly reach a point where you can start to throttle back.

Eventually you can even reach your cruising altitude and your momentum will carry you along with only a minimal effort required on your part.

Not that you would want to let down your guard for new and better ways to run your business, but simply that the energy and time required would be greatly reduced allowing you to use those personal resources for better things like family and personal time.

Open up your throttle to full and fly high.
