The Origin of Labor Day

Labor Day is truly a global holiday, or as it is known internationally May Day. The roots of Labor Day stretch back to the 1810's and what was known as the eight hour day movement. Robert Owen, as early as 1817 had formulated the goal of the eight-hour day and coined the slogan Eight hours labor, Eight hours recreation, Eight hours rest.

In the new founded Wellington colony in 1840, the carpenter Samuel Parnell refused to work more than eight hours a day. This movement also began in Australia, when the Stonemasons stopped working and proceeded to march on Parliament from the University of Melbourne, to achieve an eight hour work day. This movement eventually found its way to Canada as well, and Labor Day in Canada as well as the United States can be attributed directly to the efforts of the Knights of Labor.
Origin of Labor Day_

The Knights of Labor was labor union founded in secrecy in December 1869, by a group of Philadelphia tailors led by Uriah S. Stephens. Originally called 'The Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor', it was designed to protect all who worked for a living. They organized a parade by on September 5, 1882 in New York City which became an annual parade when it was organized a second time in 1884.
The International Workingmen's Association, many of whom were socialists or anarchists, favored a May 1 holiday. With the event of Chicago's Haymarket riots in early May of 1886, president Grover Cleveland believed that a May 1 holiday could become an opportunity to commemorate the riots. Thus, fearing that it might strengthen the socialist movement, he quickly moved in 1887 to support the position of the Knights of Labor and their date for Labor Day.
Since then, Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September in the United States since the 1880s. The September date has remained unchanged, even though the government was encouraged to adopt May 1 as Labor Day, the date celebrated by the majority of the world.
Enjoy your leisure time and enjoy your family members, have a happy labor day from everyone at The Motivated Entrepreneur.

Labor day is upon us. Barbeques, family fun, events, gatherings, and time to catch up with old and new friends,. For some strange reason I always think it is the beginning of the end of summer yet it is far from it. It has been a difficult time for many in Real Estate but for some odd reason I actually see the market starting to take off. I do not know if it is because it is an election year, or the people are tired of listening to the doomed news of the media. The truth is I really cannot think of a better time in history to buy a home. The rates are incredibly low, the choice is plentiful, and if you have good credit you can buy  that home

Not too long ago I was conversing with Elizabeth Weintrab about Fha's. (Elizabeth is a shing star and an expert on lots of topics I think if Elizabeth ever needed tutoring they would have to fly someone in from another planet. If there was a picture of a decent human being that was a role model for us all in the dictionary. A very charming, graciuos, and beautiful woman. As you can tell this is one of my role models)and we were reminiscing about FHA and VA loans. When I got into this business their was conventional, VA, FHA, and WHEDA. Along came ARMS, and then the whole sub prime thing hit the fan. The truth is FHA is always been there and it is better than ever.

If you are in a bind why not find a lender to do a seminar with you about first time buyers and FHA loans. The truth is you have to get the news out to these buyers that the ratios are better in their favor, you can mortgage the MIP, and you can get in with as little as 3% down. There are many programs that states offer to help stimulate home ownership. So what are you waiting for. In stead of riding a storm out get ion top of the wave. You can make things happen if you only take a step back out of the box and look at the big picture.

All those for rent signs. Ever think that those are a flag for landlords that want to cash out or starker up (a Starker is in reference to IRS section code 1031 that helps defer capital gains)

Wake a tomorrow with a game plan, a whole new one. If you have problems call me; I will point you in the right direction.

For example all I heard last year was how difficult it had become to sell multi families. Yet, I sold more multi familes in the State of Wisconsin than any other Broker through out the state. It is all mind set and attitude.

The next time you doubt yourself google "the Secret" and watch the clip "the first 20 minutes of the movie". This will get you thinking about how you attract the good and bad into your life. This is so true.

So this Labor Day weekend make it a happy, healthy, and enjoyable time. Forget about work for a while, hug someone, call someone you have not talked to for ages, and best of all make amends with someone you should have years ago.For me, dare to be different.

Hi Glenn,

Great post about labor day. Thanks. In the end you mentioned some social network for real estate agents, and you also "do work for Google and Fidelityassets.com". What do you mean when you say you work with Google.

I use a new service, called LookupPage (www.lookuppage.com) which aims exactly to that niche. This service in not a social network like LinkedIn or Naymz, but designated for professional users which want to create a web page of their own, that will be visible in all search engines.
