This post was stirred out of the overwhelming number of questions I get about how to optimize an ActiveRain blog and profile for the search engines.  I realize that many of you have outside blogs, and only use ActiveRain as a supplemental blog, but that is ok!  Your AR blog is still a very powerful tool, and one that should be optimized properly so it can be successful not only within the AR network and Localism, but on search engines too!

Here is a Basic SEO Quiz For You…

“What is the number one thing search engines look at when deciding to rank your site in the search engines?’

1. Page Content

2. URL’s

3. Title Tags

4. Incoming Links

Any ideas??  Well, if you answered #3, you answered correctly.  Title tags, or Meta Titles are the most important factor in search engine ranking.  Of course all the above are important, and #4 is a close second, but Titles have consistently shown to be the most important attribute to search engines.  And don’t take my word for it, take a look at this study that polled the top SEO experts in the country on what the top factors were.

What is a Title Tag???

Let’s start with the basics.  For those of you that aren’t really saavy to website architecture, this may be helpful.

“A Title Tag, or Meta Title Tag is an HTML element placed on webpages to help identify the page”

It’s commonly used by search engines to determine what a page is about, and thus help rank that page for keywords included in the Title Tag.

Where Can You Find a Title Tag?

Most pages on the internet have a Title tag.  You just need to know where to look.  Here are 2 places you will probably see Title Tags most often:

The easiest way to determine what the Title Tag is for any given page, is to look at the top part of your browser when looking at a page:

title tag

The other place where you can find titles commonly is in the search engines themselves.

strawberry ice cream

So… with the understanding that title tags are the most important part of search engine ranking.  What can YOU do about it? A few things…

Title Tag on Your Activerain Profile Page

Many people on ActiveRain have utilized this feature already, but for you newbies out there, and others that may not have realized why this was important, take note…

When you type in a first and last name for profile, it automatically becomes the meta tag title of your profile page, and is used on may places of the site to identify you.  So make sure to tell people who you are, AND the areas you serve (including keywords that will help you rank better for your profile page).

activerain title tags seo

Want proof that this can help your ranking?  Take a look at this:

seo ranking proof

Title Tag on Your Activerain Blog

The Title Tag on your blog works much the same way as your profile page.  Whatever you insert as the Blog Title becomes the Title Tag of your blog home page.  My blog home page is at: http://activerain.com/blogs/hismove  notice that the title tag is the same as the title of the blog.  In other words… I want to use the keywords that I want to rank for the most as the title of my blog.

I don’t suggest creating a blog title that simply reads:  “Las Vegas Real Estate”…   Use something that separates you from the pack.  Something Catchy, memorable, etc.  But DO include some relevant keywords in the title… that is the point of this whole post.  Showing you how to customize these titles so you can rank better.

activerain customizing titles

Title Tag on Activerain Blog Posts

Ok, so this part may be basic for some, but I’ve found that so many people simply don’t understand this concept.

When you post a blog post, the title of that blog post automatically becomes the Meta Tag Title of that page.  This is also true for many other types of blogging platforms: wordpress, blogger, and Typepad all use a similar system which is one of the reasons blogs rank so well in the search engines.

meta data

So, what is the significance to understanding that blog post titles become Meta Tag Titles?  Hopefully, you’ll think alot harder when it comes time to writing your blog post titles!!!

Not only do post titles need to describe what you’re writing about, but they need to include keywords that can help that post rank higher in the search engines.  If you don’t include strong keywords in that title, don’t expect to see that post ranking well.

I hope this short tutorial was helpful for you in understanding why Title Tags are important, and how you can maximize them in the search engines.

Please comment if you have any questions!!

@Cheryl

The general rule is to try to stay between 65-70 characters.  This includes spaces.  It usually works out to about 8-12 keywords.

About getting a Tomato blog - just for real estate agents? How do you balance two blogs that have the same content? Do the blogs someway have different audiences? different topics?

@Scott  When you have multiple blogs, it's not really a problem, it's just good to know how to promote each one individually.  For example, if you only have the time to write for one blog, and you have a main blog, and an Activerain blog... it's probably better to write most of that content on your main blog that is on your domain name.  Activerain is a wonderful place, but I don't think I have to tell you that I can be on someone else's profile in 2 clicks...  there is no loyalty.  But when you drive traffic to your main site, you have the ultimate control.

So, that only leaves you with 2 options.  If you aren't willing to write unique content for 2 blogs, you need to pick the best one, and write for it.  You can either drop the 2nd one, or use the 2nd one as a syndication tool.  In the case where your 2nd blog is on Activerain, I would choose that one as the syndication blog.  Write everything on your main blog, but use those same articles on the Activerain blog.  If you're unsure on how to do this, let me know.  There are ways to get around duplicate content issues, and I can get into those if you like... just let me know.

But that is the strategy that I would use.  Hope that made sense...

@John  Yes, I do think there is value there.  Be careful not to adjust titles of posts that are already performing well.  Also, on your outside blog, make sure that it is set up to keep the URL slug the same if you change the post title.

But if you notice that a post isn't performing well in search, try using some different keywords and see if that helps.  Remember, Title Tags are the number one things SE's look at for ranking.  Good luck!!

@Jeff  I use a basic program called Snag it.  http://www.techsmith.com  It's good for graphic design challenged people like me!  Best software investment I've ever made...  I recommend it for all bloggers.  I use it everday... it's seriously amazing.  I would campaign for them if possible.

Hey Justin just a great post for those that know little about SEO. I am always amazed at some of the titles I see that will rarely come up in the search engines. This post should help quite a few people.

7:42pm • #88

Please Note

Google uses the first 60 characters including spaces, And if space # 60 ends in the middle of a word google displays the whole word. Also don't type the same word 2 times in a row. And make sure all keywords are displayed on your page. preferably in 2 word strings, do not duplicate your exact title in your text because active rain does this for you and 2 many times might get you penalized......

Justin,

A previous blog post on AR talked about branding yourself in the blog title.  The example showed insurance companies like GEICO with their company names first and then the blog title so that their brand was included in the search results.  Do you recommend this practice?  What are the pluses and minuses?

I have paid attention to this on my personal website, but not on AR, thanks for the smack on the forehead, waking me up to the additional placement possibilities with a few easy changes.

Sorry Randy,

I don't like post hijackers that are just trying to advertise.  Especially when it doesn't ad anything to the conversation.  Don't want to be rude, but those comments aren't welcome here... that's why I deleted yours.

Justin:  This is a terrific post.  It was very easy to understand - not too technical for us non-techies - and very valuable.  I'm going right now to check my title tags on AR and see if they need some work.  Thanks again.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for the great advice - quick question...Do leaving responses and comments on peoples blogs benefit SEO?

@Scott   on Activerain no.  It won't help your ranking.  Commenting on outside blogs can help on certain blogs because you are getting the link back (only on some)... the greater value in commenting on other blogs is relationships, networking, branding, and traffic.

Thanks for the tip of adjusting your Profile to create a Title Tag. I went back to my profile and made the appropriate changes right away.

Justin: I'm a little late to the party here, but thank you for the very useful advice and clear explanation of meta tags and title tags. Just when you think you know enough, you find out there is so much more to understand.

This is me, giving you a standing ovation. The article you referred to is the best I've read about SEO and how Google works. It's so chock full of information that my brain hurts now! I've bookmarked it and will refer to it often. Thank you thank you. SEO is one of life's biggest mysteries but I know a lot more today than I did a year ago...thank to the rain.

My blog has been ranking extremely well so with a great deal of trepidation, I tweaked my profile as you suggested. I'll track it to see if it makes any difference good or bad.

A fan for life,

Carol Clay

Justin - thanks for another great tip.  I didn't realize that title tags were so important. The way you've laid out how title tags at AR are created is a real help.

Hi Justin,

I would like more information on maintaining multiple blogs and how to handle the issues of duplicate content.  My main blog is a part of my website and I need to put information there but it seems that when I blog on Active Rain, my posts show up more quickly on Google.  It would be great if I could post the same information on both blogs.

A tutorial on these issues would be great if you think the information would have wide appeal.

Thanks in advance,

Carol

Hi Carol,

There have been a few posts on AR about this.  In my opinion, you can use the same content on both your website and AR.

But there is 1 rule:  make sure to link back to whatever article you want to be the original.  So, if you write a post on your website, then copy it onto AR, make sure the AR version has a link back to your original article.

And if you are still having trouble with your AR posts showing up in the serps instead of your main site, try posting on your main site, and waiting about a week before you re-post on AR.

Hope that helps...

Thanks, Justin.  My understanding of your information is that I should always post to my main blog before I post the information to AR.  Regarding linking from the AR post back to my blog, is this link something that I incorporate into the text of the AR blog or is it something that I can put at the end of the post?

HI Carol,

You can put a link in the body of the text or just create a small footer section in your AR post with a link

Justin,

I appreciate you posting information like this.  I immediately made changes to my Active Rain blog and profile.  The only thing I could not figure out how to change is my user name.  It still shows up as my name.  Should I change this to reflect my new headings.  Why is your username hismove?  Should I use something like ChapelHillDurhamHomes?

@Jodi

You can't change your username.  That is why mine is Hismove!  It represents my other company and the one I started blogging under when I first started.

Hello Justin, we've reworked our blog title, and been getting better at our article titles -- with good results.  My question for you is in regards to #4, and building incoming links to our AR Blog.  Specifically, when we are loading our blog into a Directory or Commenting on a non-AR Blog should we be pointing back to:
A) http://ActiveRain.com/UserName or;   B) http://ActiveRain.com/blogs/UserName  or, some combination of the two over time?

Thanks!  -- John

Good information. We came across a similar post several months ago and thought about it. We decided not to use keywords in our titles as it would get redundant. There's no doubt it would be beneficial for SEO and our 3 local competitors who use this tactic are all on the first 2 pages of google, but it makes it really hard for people to take you seriously when you put real estate in a title that is referencing a post about cooking for example.  Again, this works and i think it's great that you are educating others on this wonderful SEO strategy but it appears, in our opinion, that those who do this are focused more on SEO than on reaching their consumers directly with proper titles related to the subject. We'll have to think about this one some more before. Great advice. Keep up the good work as always.
