Ever since I started this business I have noticed that the bigger you are in mortgage world or any business you work in that has you earning a commission you must have a name tag. If you are anybody or want to get your name out this is the best thing and the cheapest thing to-do. I HAVE GOTTEN PEOPLE TO SEND ME BUSINESS JUST BY WEARING MY NAME TAG OUT WHILE AT THE GAS STATION TO EATING LUNCH. People just sometimes just come up to me and say, "Hey you work in the mortgage business..." It has worked wonders and people just don't understand that. I love my name tag and I proudly wear it everywhere I go. There is only one other loan officer that I know in my company that has one. I do it because I want everyone to know that I do mortgages. From Gas station attendants to my mechanic. Plus I always have my cards in my pocket. I try to hand out as many as I can. I go thru a box of 500 within a two month period.

Do you think that I am doing something wrong in this or could it be that I am on the right track to success?

I don't have one now, but I think I will be getting one soon.

They are really not that expensive.  You can probably get one from an embroydery shop, or even places that engrave trophies, etc. for less than $15  Just think of the return on investment for that.

I remember being told to ALWAYS wear my name badge when away from the house. I am new to RE, but I can tell you that my wife has picked up enough business because of conversations started by her badge, to pay for that badge 100,000 times over.

You are DEFINITELY doing the right thing. As a realtor, you could be pumping gas and someone will approach you. Take every opportunity you can to promote yourself.

you are right wear them and wear them proadly. some of the women in the office have 5 to 10 one for each outfit.

As for the card stats say that a card is worth $8 each unless they are in your pocket or in your desk or at home then they are worth $0

Hi Benjamin -

I always thought it was interesting that you could identify a real estate agent by his name tag. These days, you  can identify the entire industry by their name tags - agents, inspectors, mortgage folks, etc.

I did some on-line research and came across this guy named Scott.  Scott's been wearing a name tag for 2,339 consecutive days.  He even had "Hello, My name is Scott" tattooed on his chest.

I'm reminded of the old adage that people do business with people they know - even if it's merely being at the same place at the same time.  I commend you for identifying yourself to your perspective clients and in turn, making it easier to do business with you.

Shirts, Shirts and more shirts.  I have tank tops for the gym and hot days, tees for going shopping in.  I can not tell you how many people ask me about real estate just from the shirts.

I'm a member of LoanToolBox and just started a thread last night regarding name badges and an "unscientific experiment" I was conducting.

For years I scoffed at the whole name tag thing - but I am 100% a believer.  Without fail - nearly every time I have my nametag on in public SOMEBODY will comment on it.  Its much easier and less threatening to get contact info and hand out your card when the other person starts the conversation.

Wear those tags....!

I wear a nametag when showing properties and when I meet someone for the first time. Also at networking events.

I don't wear it all the time although I see the benefits of doing so.

Benjamin, you're on the right track :)

Ben-Great post.  I always say, at least to our real estate agents, you are a secret agent unless you wear your nametag everywhere.

One tweak on the business card side, try and get the other person's contact information so you can add them to your database and start to periodically stay in touch with them.  If you control their information you have a better chance of building a relationship with them that will lead to business.

Keep up the great work!

I've heard it go both ways... some people say do it because there's no such thing as too much exposure... some people say don't because sometimes it doesn't look 'classy'...

if it is getting you business then go for it!

What a great idea! I've recently had some t-shirts made, so let's see if they generate anything. Thanks for the idea.

I've also came across the Hello...My Name Is Scott site.  Instead of putting just your name and brokerage name on the name badge, consider putting a interesting slogan or picture or something.  Create a badge that will peak someones curiosity.  Of course you have to wear it where they can see it.   You have nothing to lose by trying it.

Gee Ben, as I sit here typing this to you...........I realize I forgot my name tag.  Thanks for reminding me. Wear it everywhere.

Name tags are definitely conversation starters...I work for Coldwell Banker and have the name tag with the Golden Retriever on it....at first I wasn't sure...but Wow... It is like a walking billboard.  Plus I truly think people feel more comfortable starting a conversation with anybody if they know their name.

Great Post...but what is the hand written comment?

You are absolutely right. I had one when I was at my old office but I never wore it. Now, I am about to order another this week and start wearing it next week. I hear a lot of people have gotten business by wearing their name badge.

Benjamin-

Thanks for the post.  I'm a newbie in the business and have wondered if they work.  One agent in my office has several and wears hers everyday.  I think I might have to look into some for myself. :-)

As a lady mortgage officer I wear the beaded necklace type that has a plastic holder where I place my business card.  Actually my first attempt the the writing was too small.  I made a different one card size  on my computer that says  "  My name and I do Mortgages!"      It works

Benjamin, this will sound funny coming from a guy driving a MINI Cooper with his name/logo plastered all over it, but I just can't wear a name tag.  I don't know why.  I can wear a car, but not a name tag.  I have a lot of weird hang ups!

Hi Benjamin:

Just a note from a 64 year old retired realtor in Orlando.

Name plates as i call them are very important. i manufacture them for all types of businesses including many thousands of realtors nationwide. I get orders and re-orders from realtors almost every day of the week. Our plates are classy and are in-expensive.

We offer a money back guarantee if you don't like them for any reason and I have never been asked to make a refund since we started in 1998.

Best regards;

Charles Pennington   www.autonameplate.com
