Another benefit of living in Newport Beach is the abundance of activities. There are several harbors nearby where people own private yachts and fishing boats to enjoy sport fishing. Or you can arrange a charter or take a day fishing boat through www.Newportlanding.com. The main harbor in Newport Beach is Newport Harbor. The summer months (typically July and August) are opportune months to fish for Marlin because the water is warmer (approximately 71 to 73 degrees). Last weekend, I was fortunate enough to spend a weekend on a Sport Fisher out of Huntington Harbor and motored to Avalon, Catalina. Huntington Harbor is located approximately 10 miles north of Newport Beach. Four reels were put out (two on outriggers) and utilized fishing lures which were put on the end of the reels to resemble fish prey. Prior to this, the bait tank was filled with anchovies, and Mackerels were caught to attract a Marlin. We motored out to an area called Avalon Bank, (which is a few miles off Avalon in Catalina) and after about two hours, we hooked a Marlin. What an incredible experience to reel one in. This Marlin was approximately 125 pounds and definitely put up a good fight. As it was being reeled in, a huge (I mean huge - about 30-40 foot) gray whale surfaced right near the Marlin. After catching a Marlin (it was released) the protocol is to hang your blue and white flag (meaning you have caught a Marlin) but also to hang another red and white flag (which means catch and release). Later we saw two more whales. What an incredible day. On the way home from Avalon on Sunday, we were fortunate enough to have dolphins swimming right along the yacht. For access to sport fishing off Newport Harbor, visit www.newportlanding.com. There are open party boats, day fishing, and private deep sea fishing. Newport Beach is a very diverse place to live. From surfing to fishing, there are always incredible things to do and experience.
