The Emperors New Clothes - and saying what needs to be said

By

I recently posted a series of Blogs about politics and the candidates running in the National Elections in November this year.

A fellow ActiveRainer commented, saying "No more politics".

On the one hand, we're all exhausted by the constant barrage of political news, advertisements, arguements and debates - and we want to take a few steps back and close out eyes and ears to all the dissent and animosity.

But unless we, "the people", stay involved with what is going on, we do not deserve the right to participate and comment about what is happening to our country. It's the responsibility of each and every citizen to stand up for what they believe is fair and just.

I don't believe in remaining silent to simply maintain the status quo. People need to say what needs to be said and stand up for the truth - even if it means upsetting some people along the way.

I keep thinking of the little boy in the Hans Christain Andersen fable, who in his simple truth proclaimed that the reverred emperor was actually naked, while all others - including the emperor - were too embarressed to say the truth for what it was.

Steve - Many thanks for a great comment.

Bill - We should not tolerate "hate speech" at all. I believe Blogging is an excellent resource for clients and associates to learn about us as individuals and Realtors.

Got to Say, what you got to say.  I try not to get into politics with my clients and potential clients unless they bring it up, but once the door is open, then a good discussion or debate is always just around the corner.  Since  the pres campaining has started, I have picked up more clients.  This is GREAT!!

Is AR the best place for this though?  I think you should pick up info where you can, but sometimes it is out of place.  Debating politics with your potential clients?  I would rather remain neutral, personally.

Brian - Good to hear from you - Thanks for reading.

Randall - I understand your sentiments. However, I often find that sharing common values and views with my clients (and prospective clients), strengthens our rapport.

Stewart, I've seen posts on AR on all kinds of topics, many unrelated to politics. There are hundreds of blogs posted here every day. If someone doesn't want to read about politics, they have lots of other choices. I'm personally interested in hearing other viewpoints on the presidential candidates and don't have time for other blog sites right now, so I'm glad to hear some of them here.  I'm going to check out your other blogs. Thanks

Too often the political posts turn into rants and/or fights with no reason or logic to be seen. That is why I would rather see the political posts be confined to groups FOR politics. There ARE AR groups to discuss politics. It particularly bugs me to see the posts in the "Christian" groups demonizing the Democrats. God isn't Republican. (THERE- I couldn't resist slipping in my own political comment.)

Hi Stewart,

Politics are important.  Unfortunately the past few elections the disagreements have been particularly venemous.  I don't understand why it has gotten so much worse.

There were always differences of opinion, but you used to be able to have friends on the other side.

All the best!

Leslie: Sadly, there are those that believe there should be no seperation of Chruch and State. They cross post their hate of Democrats with their "love" of Christ. Quite confusing.

Kevin: As long as there exists Hannity, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Malkin, Ingrahm, Savage and Coulter, there will be no unity in this county. These people exist to divide. Without stirring up hate, they would have no ratings. A divided America keeps them in business.....and "us" apart.

Right on... you are totally right and I am going to refer back to this in a couple of days and see what else people have said.

I usually stay out of politics here in the rain because I am too far left...yes i said it (actually most of us in middle are now being portrayed as "far left" ) to be objective and the prevailing ideas most often presented are often knee jerk, non issue rants. Thanks for a thoughtful post!

Today I replied to a comment from Linda Mae McCannon, who participated in my Blog: "The National Debt Clock - Is it a Ticking Financial Time-Bomb?". My reply made me crystallize my thoughts, as follows:

"As you can tell, I do get passionate about my opinion - but at the same time I am interested to hear other, substantiated views.

I think your two questions are so relevant .... We do need a President who has the intellect and personal skills required to navigate us out of the mess we're in .... and I believed that Hillary Clinton was that person.

Unfortunately, she didn't win the Democratic Candidacy ... so when I researched Obama and McCain I determined (in my opinion) that Obama has a greater capacity to deal with the many different facets of the job. I think McCain is too narrow-minded and limited in his thinking. Taxes are used as a "Hot Button" to evoke emotion rather than clear thought.

Republicans will never admit that Bush was a mistake, so they aren't able to face the cold hard fact that higher taxes (predominantly for the more affluent), is essential to pay our Country's bills.

America is a GREAT country ... and yes it has it's fair share of problems ... but we do have it far better than most in the rest of the world - and for that every individual needs to pay some form of a price - and if it's higher taxes as part of a comprehensive plan for our Nation's future, then so be it! "

Stewart,

Thank you for for answering my comment so clearly and precisely.

I must admit until this election I never REALLY took a long hard look at the facts concerning the candidate's I cast my vote for the last 36 years.    The difference this time?  Our country is at a crossroad.

Fighting terrorism, our young men at war dying daily, nuclear threat, the verge of economic disaster, America being hated by other countries around the globe more than ever in History. THESE ARE THE ONLY ISSUES WE AS AMERICANS SHOULD BE DISCUSSING!

BUT , the Republicans will continue to distract everyone from the real issues with Abortion, Gay Rights and the Secret Muslin. Messiah life of Obama.

Stewart,

Finally something I can agree with.  We need to speak up and not just sit back and wait for things to get better.  It doesn't matter if we are real estate agents, mortgage people, home inspectors or whatever.  We are all americans and have to live with our voting decisions.

As far as taxes go, I can see having everyone share in getting things back on track but I can not see taking from someone and giving to another.

John McCain realized his political ploy to not attend the debate backfired on him.

So he has agreed to participate in the debate .... seems like he lacked the courage of his  political convictions regarding the "rescue deal".

Stewart,

You really are predictable.  If he goes to the debate, you say what you said.  If he does NOT, you say he is avoiding it or something.  Can he REALLY win with liberals?

John - what exactly did McCain hope to achieve by not attending the debate?

Can you or anyone give an honest and candid explanation?

As for your reaction and comment - typical of blindsighted conservative rhetoric.
