How many of you are involved in local REALTOR related committees?

I'm involved in a couple of committees within our local county association including our government and public affairs committee and the membership and community affairs committee.  I find that my involvement in these groups helps me to be on top of a lot of local topics as well as getting me inside information on upcoming projects for industries outside of direct real estate but that impact our communities.

Besides this set of committees I am also involved in several other related business committees such as the associate member group of the local Rental Housing Association.

How many others on AR are also involved at this level?  What do you feel you gain as a benefit in your involvement outside of the good feeling of helping direct local resources, promoting community needs, and such?

I am the chair over the Cultural Diversity Committee and serve on the Political Committee at the local board, plus Chair over the Housing Initiative Committee for the Texas Association of Realtors and involved on the Cultural Diversity at NAR.

I am also the Current President of NAHREP (National Association of Real Estate Professionals) in Austin plus a National Director. Advisor to the Asian Real Estate Professionals of Austin TX, plus 2 other organizations that are not in the real estate industry. In other words, I don't have a life, right now.

All in all I sit on a total of 8 boards.

Hi Victor,

I would agree that being on 8 boards pretty much leaves you with no real life to speak of.  Why do you continue on so many then?  Do you get that much gain from all of them that it is worth it to not have more social opportunities?

I've found that I've had to walk a fine line between my real estate related commitments as well as my non-profit ventures (I'm a co-founder of FEAR Project) and not getting completely wiped out from being able to have a small amount of social life on top of my work. It's a good thing I am so energetic or else I'd be harried.

I decide after all the work and no time for myself that I would back off from some of the groups because I want to start to enjoy life again. I have done so little by little. It is starting to happen.

Working on all the groups, I do have to say that I have gain a lot of business and referrals. I am very well know and exposed. This is why I have decide to back off, now. I have establish my creditability and face. It is all about branding and I think that I have done that pretty well.

I must confess I am not. I know it is too easy to say "I'm too busy", that is part of it. I guess the other thing is that I do not really see the benefit. If I was more excited about the efforts I would make the time.
