Many people complain that organic is more expensive and while it may appear so initially, you can learn to shop for organics for just a bit more than conventional foods. But the real reason it is not more expensive is the health benefits outweigh the cost. Pay me now or pay me later. But the pay me later part is in ill health and prescription drugs. This can become extremely expensive.

You can start out slowly to get organics into your diet. There are certain foods that are more important to buy as organic than others.

The other way that you can save money while eating organics is by cutting out the junk food. Most of a normal western diet consists of a lot of junk food which is expensive over the long haul and has no nutritional value. It doesn't matter if you buy conventional junk food or organic junk food. It is all junk food and not healthy. Just because it is organic does not mean it is good for you.

A 4 year study was just concluded in Europe and some of the things we already knew were confirmed as well as some interesting new information was found. This study showed that organic food is way more nutritious than its' conventional counterparts. It also helps to improve your health and longevity. It is obvious that foods grown without pesticides in healthy soil are going to be good for you.

  • The study found that organic fruit and vegetables contain up to 40% more antioxidants.
  • Organic lettuce and other vegetables contain more zinc and iron.
  • Organic milk contains up to 90% more antioxidants.

There are some foods that you should buy organic no matter what. If you can not find these in the organic section than go without until it is in stock again.
The most important food to eat as organic is meat if you are a meat eater. It would take pages and pages for me to lay out my evidence of this.
Suffice it to say, go to Amazon.com and get the book, THE CHINA STUDY by Dr.Campbell . This is a book my own medical doctor told us to buy and read.

The other food that is the most laden with chemicals and are highly toxic due to the blend of chemicals are Strawberries. If we don't see organic strawberries we don't buy them. We do go out to a farm to pick our strawberries and they are not treated with pesticides. So those are the 2 foods that are the most important to buy as organic.

Here is a list of foods that you do NOT have to buy organic:

  • Mango
  • Papaya
  • Pineapple
  • Avocado
  • Sweet Corn (Frozen)
  • Bananas
  • Kiwi
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Eggplant
  • Sweet peas ( Frozen)
  • Asparagus
  • Onion

These foods were tested to be the safest conventional grown foods. Just make sure you are not buying GMO varieties. Next month we will talk about how to find out if you have a GMO food or not.

Organic is the way to go whenever possible.  When I started down the organic path it was not as easy to get as it is today.  Most mainstream markets carry organic produce and the costs have gone down over the years as more farmers are producing organics.

You are right. Cutting out junk food can save you alot of money. Like never having to go to the doctors. What a savings that is.

We've started buying into our local farms by participating in CSAs (Community Shared Agriculture).  The veggies are organic but not the fruit.  The taste is amazing though since it's so fresh.  We are lucky, here in SE PA we have plenty of CSAs to choose from.

We all need to be aware of what we eat and consume ---- you are what you consume.

Oh good...that list is everything I buy and not worry about being organic. I have found that they are putting the word Organic on stuff all over the place now. And like you said...organic doesn't mean it's all good.

Josef- Yes, the cost has gone down a lot! There is so much more to choose from too. Consumers demanded it, the companies respond.

Debi- Perhaps this post will inspire you to eat healthier. Most all diseases are tied to bad eating habits.

Scott- the savings in the cost of health care is HUGE! Just look at diabetes type 2, totally controllable and curable and preventable through diet. People have no idea about how much the food we eat creates the symptoms we feel, the energy or not, the mood swings, even bi bolar and autism. Huge stuff!

I am lucky to have a good organic grocer out my back door. One thing I look at with organic and conventional is place of origin. If is isn't a must go organic type of product, I like to buy the local produce not just for freshness, but also environmental impact.

Katerina,

I don't mind paying extra for organic foods....some I've had taste better my only problem is I must be allergic because my stomach bothers me after I eat certain types. I eat oat meal and the organic doesn't get along with me for some reason. But I love strawberries.

I agree, eating organic is the way to go. The area I live and work in is the organic headquarters for dairy products and home of Organic Valley. We have a great organic coop with a wonderful organic cafe which I partake in daily!

Thanks for this great info-I started buying organic milk but was put off by the prices on the organic meat-my family are big meat-eaters. I read your post about Seventh Generation detergent-didn't realize the regular had all those poisons in it. Will buy that next time!
