In November 2003, two employees and I did an inspection where the only people who would be at the inspection were the three of us and our Clients, a mom and dad with three young children, the oldest around 10.

After introductions, we went to do our job and occasionally saw mom and dad walking around discussing things and the three children behaving themselves and playing in the yard. About halfway through the inspection, one of my employees came to tell me that he had seen the parents drive off but the three kids were still there. I didn't believe him, but sure enough, three kids and no parents.

I asked the oldest child, Jason, where his parents were. He said that they had left to go Christmas shopping and had told them to stay there and play. San Diego is not some small rural community where everyone knows everyone! Mom and dad had just met us, spent 10 minutes with us, and then pronounced us worthy of babysitting their three young children while they went Christmas shopping!

When we had finished, mom and dad were not back yet, so we played with the kids, and you can see what the three of them did to me in Figure 1.

When I delivered the reports to the Realtor's office (this was back in the stone age before I did email reports), there was an envelope waiting for me at the front desk. Inside was a $100 check and a real nice note thanking me for taking care of the children. That's all well and good, but my employees and I should never have been put in that situation. They are lucky that I didn't call the police for child abandonment!

Parents, your children are too precious to leave in the care of someone whom you know absolutely nothing about other than the fact that you're going to pay them $499 to do some work for you!

Wow! As a mother I'm at a loss for words... (give me a moment)... how frightening...and how unfortunate for their children that this is the type of risk their parents are willing to take with their safety. And thank you...thank you for staying there with them until their parents returned. I don't know what else to say but:    Mr. Russel Ray (San Diego Home Inspector / Babysitter)???

did they buy the house?  or do they go around leaving their kids with strangers all the time like that?  I had one of my agents bring his 2 kids in the office the other day.  Next thing I know he's gone and our administrator and I are left here with his 2 kids.  Not a bye or leave or anything.  It's not acceptable.

Russel - That is a crazy story.  I agree wholeheartedly with you.  I have three children myself, and I can't imagine just leaving them like that.  On another note, your photo reminds me of the old joke, "What do you call a man with no arms and no legs in a pile of leaves?  Russell."  Get it?  Sounds like "rustle".

Hey, Folks! Thanks for stopping by.

To this day I kind of regret not calling the police because I do wonder about the parenting skills of those parents and what the children might be in for.

Rebecca—I'll pass on the additional professional title. Thanks, though.

June—If I remember correctly, they did buy the house.

Jason—I got hassled a lot in high school because a #1 song at the time was "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?" by the Bee Gees (prior to their disco fame of the late 1970s-early 1980s). One line says, "I can still feel the breeze that rustles through the trees."

At least you got paid, but a very scary situation.  If one of those kids would have gotten hurt, i'm sure the parents would be looking at you!  I'm not sure what I would have done in that situation.  Perhaps cash the check immediatly and a cussing out of the parents?  I don't know.

My kids are welcome in the office, but I would never use somebody in the office to babysit.  Actually they only go in if i'm in for a few minutes.  I let them raid the candy jar but then they sit down and wait for me to be done.

Wow!  I'm shocked.  The first thought that came to my mind was the liable position those parents put you in.  How completely irresponsible.  Thank goodness they left them with three GOOD men, although at the time how could they have known that?

That is scary! But unfortunately that is the way some SCARY parents are. Good for you to stay and actually CARE if they were safe! (unlike their parents). These days I probably call the police, if not just to save those kids from future harm.

Russell Ray, Unbelievable.... What in the world were those parents thinking?     Don't they remember it was a Handyman that kidnapped and killed Polly Klass.  They were so fortunate that you are the kind and caring person you are.

Russel, someone else obviously saw the good in you. It's an amazing story, but let me say thank you to hanging out and watching to see that the kids were safe.

Without a doubt, Child Protective Services should have been called.  Perhaps you should still report it.
