MAKE SURE CHILDREN DON'T GO HUNGRY

By
Real Estate Agent with Johnson Real Estate, Inc. RES.0761759

This was the second summer running, that Middletown, CT Community Renewal Team offered free lunches for children in Middletown and Portland.

In 2006 the number of children that participated was nearly 3,500. Last year, 2007 the number of children went up to 8,557.  This year it has more than doubled, again.  The initial tabulation indicates that 17,508 meals were served.

Some of the volunteers at the beginning of the program this summer were a little leary.. not sure what to expect.  Once the program was underway, they couldn't believe how well behaved the children were and how polite. Free lunches were served at the Community Room at Maplewood Terrace, Cross Street AME Church, Green Street Arts Center, Macdonough School, St. Francis of Assisi Church and Traverse Square.
In Portland there were two locations: Chatham Court Housing and True Vine Church.

The summer meal program closed yesterday, with a reception for volunteers at the townhall. I would like to thank Nancy Pappas, Ada Boyd Nutrition Manager Jane Coggins and Gwendolyn Davis for their hard work and dedication.  I'm glad to see everything went well.. I just hope next year fewer children will need this program.

My hats off to all the people that volunteered this year.  Job well done.

Hi Valerie,

I was intrigued by your blog can you tell me more?  Are these children of homeless?  Or just ordinary kids whose families are not able to provide for them?  We have a food pantry here in NH and they are having trouble keeping up with demand, but I never heard of just feeding children on a one-time shot.  Thanks for the info!

Hi Valerie,

What a great project. It is sad to know there are so many kids in need but wonderful hear about  organizations that step up to help.

I used to volunteer to cook for the free evening meals here in Ann Arbor.  Some of the people who came were homeless, lots were on disability and couldn't make ends meet, and some were just  folks who had run into a streak of bad luck.

I agree, let's hope that there is less need next year!

Rose... It is funny you mentioned this.  I had no idea this program was in place, so I have made some calls to find out more, but to no avail.

I've been trying to contact Sloan Brewster, at (860) 347-3331, ext. 211, or e-mail her at sbrewster@middletownpress.com to get more information.  Maybe between the two of us, we can get a call back.

Terry, what I couldn't believe are the amount of meals.. I didn't know this many children were hungry.  I'm going to have to check this out next summer to see how I can help.

Valerie - This is a major problem here in the US and around the world. It's nice to see more and more local programs addressing this issue. Thanks for bringing light to this subject!

Valerie - I'm really suprised at how many children participated.  What a huge increase from year to year!  I hope the need diminishes next year, too...  :)

Valerie, a lot of good work going on that does not get much recognition.  Good job in spreading the word.
