Where do my blog ideas come from?

If you're like me when you drive your mind goes into a trance state. It's automatic. And, this morning on my long drive up to the Kosher deli (about 50 miles from me), I passed a street which was named Brier something.

And, that started a chain of ideas:

1) Why was the street spelled Brier and not Briar? Is there a difference? Hmmmmmmmm, something to look up.

2) We have a Brier in our area. So, I wondered how many cities use the same name? Gotta do some research.

3) How many people get confused when adjacent towns use the same street name? Especially if town A has Main Street going North/South and town B has Main Street going east/west. Does it make difficult for police and ambulances and taxi drivers?

I can't answer question #1 or #3 right now. But, I did some digging and discovered the following:

570 listings in our MLS are on MAIN Street. We have a Main Street in Naperville, Lisle, Downers Grove and Glen Ellyn. And, I'm betting that these streets crossed the railroad tracks and station over 100 years ago. They still do today.

594 listings in our MLS for Washington. Both Naperville and Downers Grove have Washington streets. In fact, my office is on Washington, just south of downtown Naperville and north of Pioneer Park.

1045 listings in our MLS for streets starting with Green. We have Green Trails, Greene Road, Green Street, Greenbriar. Confused? You bet.

And if you live on Redbud you could be in any of these towns: Aurora, Plainfield, Yorkville or Woodridge.

Eileen,

Welcome to middle America!

In my area we have a S. Commerce, E. Commerce, N Commerce, and W. Commerce. More than once I've had out of area customers getting lost, calling me and saying they are on Commerce Rd.  Worst part is, somtimes these are intersections. Map of Commerce, MI US

Gary,

Just checked our MLS...there is a N commerce St in Aurora. Interesting...couldn't find any in Chicago!

So, I'll meet you at the corner of Commerce and Commerce?

And, thanks to Wikipedia there's no difference...except spelling.

Brier or briar is a common name for a number of unrelated thicket-forming thorny plants, including species in the genera Rosa, Rubus and Smilax.

Briar wood is the root wood of Erica arborea, used for making smoking pipes.
