In negotiations of any kind, it requires give and take between all parties involved.

Today, I read an article written by Mariwyn Evans, is a senior editor of REALTOR® magazine-

titled How To Win The Negotiations Without Being A Jerk.

The article gives some great tips and suggestions to effectively negotiate a transaction.

Please read the entire article by clicking the above link.

Here are a few highlights from the article;

  • Scope out the goals: Understand what the goals and needs are of the parties.
  • Scope out the other side: Try and understand the position and negotiating tactics of the other party.
  • Listen & Learn: By listening we can determine what the other side really wants!
  • Connect Through Emotions: Negotiations are emotional, always keep this fact in mind.
  • Be Flexible, Stay Focused: By staying focused and keeping emotions in check- neither party feels harmed.

There are NINE (9) additional tips to move the negotiations to the desired results. Read the entire article!

Negotiations are part of just about every interaction. The article was not written for any party to have a greater bargaining position-

just to make the negotiations easier for all involved.

Good negotiating isn't only about price, too.

Mott, thank you for that it was a very informative article. Being a jerk in negotiations is not necessary at all. The two things I dont do is interrupt, or talk too much. Finally turn everything argumentive into a positive. Thanks, Keith

Funny how much good negotiating simply requires good common sense.

Good advice on negotiating.  There is no reason to cross the line when attempting to reach a resolution with someone.

Ellie- I've been trying to get my font in order!!!

Rebecca- Negotiating should be a give and take process- both parties should feel even in the end.

Kevin- It really is plain common sense!

Keith- It is easy to become jerky during negotiations, staying calm and non-emotional is advised.

Stephen- That is THE TRUTH- Usually THE PRICE is just a smoke screen for other real concerns.

I think your philosophy which cretes a win/win situation for all concerned.

Give and take is normal as long as all parties believe they have won something.

Thanks for the great blog.

Keep on blogging and have a wonderful day.

All the best.

Mott - Negotiation is an art, some people think by being overly aggressive they are doing a good job for their side, the key is to make each party feel like they gain something.

Mott, I do not think that I have ever sat down to a negotiation that someone has not been a jerk in.

Jennifer- I agree there is certainly an artistic approach to effective negotiating. Being aggressive only alienates the people that we are moving to see things in another light.

Danny- Being "Jerky" is a way of life for some.

There are many ways to negotiate with "willing" parties. Sometimes the best negotiation is NO negotiation.
