Better care for our vets!

Last night instead of watch the democrat convention, I chose to watch Sen. McCain address the American Legion National convention in Phoenix.

Senator McCain was pretty emphatic about the need to do a better job providing quality health care for our Vets. He said one thing he plans to do is to give every vet a benefit access card that would be good at any Va facility and if one is not near the vet then that vet could use that card at a non vet facility close to them.

He also emphasized the need for quality mental health care as well.

In addition to helping the men returning from overseas, he would like to offer the same quality health care to returning women.

Our next president also said it is time to stop the lines to get into other lines and make the  healthcare required available when they need it(vets).

I was really impressed when McCain told us he plans to end the pork being attached to VA funding bills and for that matter the pork attached to other spending bills.

Senator McCain also explained why he did not support the GI bill that was first drafted a few weeks ago as he said there were flaws in the original bill. Senator McCain would like to see GI benefits  with the ability to be handed down to children or spouses of vets.

The last statement that our next president made was that he is praying to a loving God to bless and protect our troops. I say amen to that!

I agree fully that it is VERY important that we take care of our Vets and support their families in a GI Bill that WORKS! Excellent post Mike. It looks like we chose to watch the same program last night, I was honored and happy to have my father (also a Vet) watching it with me & my family.

Dione,

I am a vet and feel very strongly about taking care of them. I was not in a war so this will not apply to me but lets take care of those who are sacrificing for all of us.

McCain will be an OK President, but not a great one. The fact that the GOP has now embraced global warming as part of the platform is a real concern to me. Having said that, he will be wonderful for our military and wonderful for our national security - two things the other guy just doesn't get.

Well, I agree something needs to be done about health care in this country.

""and if one is not near the vet then that vet could use that card at a non vet facility close to them."

That scares me.  We need government to get out of this mess, not more government.

Mike,

I am a Vietnam veteran and, until just six months ago, avoided the VA system because of all the shortcomings I read about.  However, a fellow Vietnam veteran advised me to use the system when I had a service related problem.  I took his advice and I could not be more impressed with the service and care I have received from the VA hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Those who say that a government run health program is doomed to failure do not understand the service and devotion that the VA and its employees have to serving the veterans of our country.  I understand that different regional VA hospitals have varing levels of service, but the Albuquerque hospital could not be better.  Thank you, American taxpayer, for your support of the VA.

It is my understanding that certain military related issues are best treated by doctors at the VA facilities such as PTSD or mental health issues.  But non-war related illness may be treated with equal skill at non-VA facilities, relieving some of the overcrowding and distance involved in reaching a VA facility.

The idea of a benefits card which would permit a Veteran to access health services at convenient non-VA facilities when appropriate makes sense to me.  Particularly when such cards are apparently being issued to illegal aliens in parts of the country.

The debt we owe to Veterans who protect us and our interests around the world is significant.  Increasing benefits to this group - including enhanced death benefits for service related deaths of active duty personnel - is appropriate and long overdue.

Ted - great point, veterans should get at least the same access to service as illegals. They also should get at least the same access and better care than those in prison. I guess I should say we since I am also a veteran.

Mike-Those educational benefits will pass on to children if you are on active duty in 2009 for a certain number of years.

The new GI Bill for ed. benefits could not get any better and I worry if it will cause the backbone ofthe military (young NCOs)to leave a little early.

I am able to go to school and get a degree if I want to for free as a disabled vet but I can not pass it on to my children because I got out in 2004.  I am very grateful for that.

Mike,

Tonight Obama pledged the nation's support for our veterans, mostly from the fiasco of Iraq.  What do you think?

Bill,

I did like those comments very much. If Obama were to become president and could just keep half of all the promises he has made, he would indeed be a good president!
