Recently, Tori Lynn Ross posted a blog titled, "Grout Recolorant To The Rescue!" and it got me thinking about some of the things I have done to update.  Get rid of dated wallpaper, of course:

Before                               After

and paint over dark, dated wood with something light and neutral:

I loved Tori Lynn's grout recolorant tip, and all of the wonderful tricks we have up our sleeves (and packed in the car) to freshen, lighten, and update our clients' homes.  So what about you?  What's in your "Update Arsenal?"

Tamara, framing large plate glass bathroom mirrors. I always recommend it and show clients what a difference it can make. I have a blog about it as do a couple of other SIF members. It'a another easy DIY project that almost anyone can do.

Tamara- The one thing I ALWAYS recommend, and sellers have a tendency to comply, is updating the main light fixtures. The home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowes have great and affordable choices. Replacing old brass with brushed nickel is a fabulous way to make the whole home look as if it's been updated!

Tamara & Elaine -

I agree with you both, it's amazing what a can of paint and updating lighting fixtures can do for a home!

Adding or updating drawer pulls/handles in the Kitchen and/or Bathrooms is also another favorite of mine.

Great photos/transformations Tamara!

Always new front door lockset, house numbers, mailbox, outside entry lights, door mat. Always a generous flower display at front door. Always a color on the door. Always remove wallpaper. Replace venetians with 2' faux wood blinds. Have spray-painted brass fireplace screen with flat black heat-resistant BBQ paint. On granite, have changed white switch plates & plugs to stainless plates and black plugs.

Leah, Those are changes I like to make as well, though I especially like your tip about the stainless steel plates and black plugs!

A couple of small things -- It seems nearly every tub and shower I come across has peeling, moldy or stained caulking. Many homeowners don't know how to do this easy fix. If they wish to do it themselves there is a new product called caulksingles -- an applicator and caulk in one -- easy, clean and fresh looking. I've also bought a bunch of "Mr. Erasers". When I visit a home with little ones and many finger prints or dirty walls I recommend a contest on who can get the most dirt off with their Eraser -- mom's have said they become obsessed with cleaning with their Eraser and the walls look so much better too!
