It was a floor call on Wednesday and it was from the young man's mother.
"My son has just come home after seven years overseas in the Army. He had two tours in Afghanistan and he's come home with a young wife and baby. Can you help him find a place to live today?"
The million dollar home sales no longer were important. It was my first direct contact with anyone who had been there.
The young man was muscular and soft spoken. His beautiful young wife knew no English. The child was learning our language. One thing was universal and needed no interpretation. They wanted a home near the beach. They all loved the surf.
It is the end of the month and the good rental units are still occupied by northerners escaping the winter doldrums. But many will be leaving over the weekend and we have a chance to find a home for this young family. I am working with fellow agents to find a clean furnished condo or townhouse at minimal cost -- even though we are still featuring season rates which are about three times as high as off-season rates.
Some owners are willing to help this young family, while others are holding out for top dollar, preferring their units to be unoccupied rather than rent at a lower rate. I don't understand these people. While I am not a supporter of the war, I believe those who have served deserve our gratitude.
Monday morning we will be looking at more units for the young family. And we have a lead on a job for this Army veteran. It is what we do. I can't imagine anything more important.
