Real estate in a small college has a unique market that is becoming more popular. Parents and students who are facing four or more years of housing costs are considering purchasing property to be used as housing. From condominiums to multifamily unit's the trend is catching on.

Newsweek in it's Kaplan College guide recently named the State University of New York at New Paltz one of the 25 Hottest Universities. New Paltz was named Hottest Small State School.

90 minutes from New York City, the rural campus has 6,400 undergrads. The small New Paltz is growing in size and popularity. The school recently opened a 57,000-square-foot Athletic and Wellness Center with an indoor track. To learn more about SUNY New Paltz go to http://www.newpaltz.edu/

Barbara, I've seen parents pay for the kid's college with appreciation from the little condo they bought freshman year.  During periods when the markets were down, they just held on and rented them out to other students - never a shortage of tenants.  Of course, you might run into a few housekeeping issues and - Toga!  Toga!  Toga!

We're finding more and more parents wanting to do this.  I think it's a great idea and investment.

In our town of Valpo that has a University and graduate Law School as well, we have had not only parents, but adult (returning to school for that 2nd degree) clients as well :)

Graet idea for a Localism post for your area Barbara!

Sincerely,

Grace

Good thinking! Great minds think alike ;) My daughter just started college last week. She's staying in the on-campus dorms, but I know that for the area where she's attending college, it would be a great investment for the parents to purchase investment properties that would make great vacation or retirement homes in the future. And our own town is the same way.

Of course in New York, you really can't go wrong with your real estate. And you've gone the extra mile by adding entertainment in your side bar. You have everything a real estate enthusiast could want.

Lisa- I think real estate is always a great investment- no matter what the media says the "market" is. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Great point.  I have known peoplein my area who did purchase a multi-unit property when their youngster went to college.  The student lived in one unit (sometimes with another student) and they rented out the other units.  It was a good investment for them and they were able to realize a profit at the end of their youngster's college experience.

Barb - Congratulations to New Paltz, we really have some terrific school in the area.  Yes purchasing property in the area where a child is attending college is something I have seen around here.  I know in the case of Bard College even former students and their parents will come back to buy a place here because they fell in love with the area.
