This is a great public service post.  Not a year goes by that I don't see some fool pass a school bus with red lights flashing.  The drivers of the cars must live in a cave.

Good stuff C.  I dropped my kindergartner off for her first day of school today and the exact same thing happened.  The bus driver let the passing driver have it.  The driver was humiliated.  The driver is just fortunate that nothing more than an illegal pass happened.  Humiliation would have been the least of the concerns.

Violating this law should have the same penalty as drunk driving. It astounds me that anyone would do such a thing whether there was a law or not. They are our children!!! There is nothing more precious,

I just had a conversation with the bus driver this morning... they pick up on a main street when they could do so 25 feet away on a side street.

You definitely gave good driving safety tips...they don't realize that those couple of minutes saved can be deadly and something they will have planted in their minds forever.

Cynthia, I'm glad you put this info up, I am appalled at the people that either don't know the laws or ignore them because they are in a hurry.  Those are children and they need to be very careful.

Hi Lenn,
I know and it makes me so angry when I see this happen, there is no excuse.

Larry,
Well maybe the driver will remember the incident and he will be one less driver to make this mistake.  You are right,  all are very lucky no one was injured.

CYNTHIA, I'll bet anyone moving to your state learns those laws when they have to take their test to get their North Carolina drivers license.  That was not an easy test.  Good information to pass on to those who took it a long time ago though.

Jennifer B.,
I'm with you on this---how can anyone in their right mind even think about passing a stopped bus?

Hello Chuck,
Sometimes you wonder who makes these type of decisions.  I think I would call the principal of the school about that.

Sally,
Absolutely, what's a couple of minutes when compared to endangering a child's life?  Of course it is NOTHING!

Hi Barbara,
Yes, we must protect the children---they depend on us.

Craig,
Erring on the side of caution is a good practice especially when it comes to highway and driving safety.

Cynthia- Did I ever tell you I went to School Bus Driving Class...yep I did, and I learned quite a bit about our children's safety.  You're right too many people don't pay attention, and this is indeed good info.

We have that problem in my own neighborhood. I wrote a post called the leadfoot family...driving way too fast and warned but then they killed my neighbors cat right in front of my driveway...could have been a child......jerks doing 40mph in a 20mph zone. Their remorse was to buy them another cat.

Carole,
I think must people know they are just in too much of a rush and just do not think!

Gary,
Why do we even need to be reminded?

Hi Marchel,
Yes, people learn the laws, take the test and pass it but do they practice what they learned?

Gita,
Forget or ignore?  I think it's more ignore.

Kathy,
Is there anything you haven't done?  Your resume must read like the Yellow Pages.  LOL.

Hi Neal,
I think it boils down to "selfish", people are only thinking of their owns needs and wants.  You are right that cat could have been a child.

Hello Elizabeth,
Thanks, it's often the basics that people forget or neglect, isn't it?

Donna,
Our innocent and unsuspecting children, we must protect them at all costs.  Thank you.

Hello Jennifer,
How was your vacation?  I hope you were able to relax.

Thank you for your comments and even if we don't know the rules, we  can use common sense and caution.

I'm not sure if anyone will read this since the post is somewhat old...but I agree with Chuck:

"I just had a conversation with the bus driver this morning... they pick up on a main street when they could do so 25 feet away on a side street."

I see way too many bus stops on main roads that are VERY busy when there is a perfectly accessible side street 25 ft or less from the designated stop. I definitely think the School Bus Stop law is a good idea, but I also think those who plan the routes should take into consideration the fact that the children's safety could be greatly increased by placing stops on less busy streets when possible. Why is this not done to begin with?

Laura,
Very good point and one that each school transportation director should address.  When there is an option, it just makes sense to go with the safest one.    Are you in N.C?  Thank you.
