Memorial Day Celebration at Florida Retirement Community Lake Ashton

With Labor Day around the corner, it's a great time to remember what being an American means. I love how our community celebrates our great country's holidays and I am looking forward to Labor Day. At Lake Ashton, our community really came together to celebrate Lake Ashton's Veterans' Memorial.

Our community's celebration was complete. There was a presentation of the Honor Guard by a few of Lake Ashton's veterans.  The United States Flag was hoisted into the air by two USN Veterans.  At first, the flag went to full mast, and then, they lowered it to half staff in observance of Memorial Day.

A member of Lake Ashton Activities sang a beautiful rendition of The Star Spangled Banner and then the ceremony proceeded into Lake Ashton's Ballroom.  Terri Mattocks did a beautiful job presenting the invocation.  Lee Till, the guest speaker spoke about Memorial Day; past, present and future.

Each man and woman was recognized as they heard their branch song on the piano. God Bless America and I'm Proud to be an American were played with a slideshow.  We all shared a toast and moment of silence in honor of the absent companions and "Missing Men Table."  Frank Ota, a USMC, explained the significance of the table and the history of TAPS.

I think it is so great that a community like Lake Ashton can gather together as a family and recognize the people that have fought for our country. This is the first time I have heard of neighbors recognizing each other like this. I was also very glad to hear of a community administration that cares enough about its residents to put on an event.  If I didn't live in a Florida retirement community, would Memorial Day have been celebrated as a community like this?

God Bless America.
