Fun Subject: Soccer!
The 2nd Annual Mobile v. Baldwin - Battle of the Bay Soccer Showcase will be June 2 in Fairhope.
Each year the best high school age soccer players from Mobile and Baldwin face off in the Battle of the Bay: Mobile's boys take on Baldwin's boys, girls the same.
The South Alabama Boys & Girls Clubs are the recipient of the proceeds from the games. In its first year, last year, the event raised $1,000 for the clubs.
The event is sponsored by the Blast Soccer Club, a travel soccer club based on the Eastern Shore.
The teams will be led by college coaches from the University of Mobile and Spring Hill College. Other college coaches from aruund the Southeast will be visiting and scouting players.
The Battle of the Bay was started lkast year to reward high school players who had been selected for the Alabama High School All Star soccer teams but were not able to play in the all star game due to the threat of a hurricane in summer of 2005. A group of local soccer fans decided to create this event so these players could play their all star game after all.
Turns out the games were a big hit with a great crowd.
So, it's on again this year.
