What do Austin City Limits, Fiesta, the Houston Live Stock Show & Rodeo, Bryan's Texas Reds Festival, and Chili Fest in Snook have in common

They are all super fun, annual events that people look forward to.  They also all have an economic impact on the cities they are located in.  It could be argued that they are all signature events for those cities.

The exciting news is that yesterday at the City of College Station's City Council Workshop, David Gwin, the Director of Economic and Community Development, was authorized to put out a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a signature event in College Station.

He told council members that a signature event would be in line with the city's strategic plan to make College Station a fun place to be - a destination place.  The economic impact could also be substantial.   Signature events can have themes related to:Horses Breaking Free

Music

Art

Sports

Nature,

Cultural type of interests

Imagine the possibilities.  This is a really exciting idea for the City of College Station to pursue

Happy Birthday Sondra. We are all glad you are back in the Rain! College Station has huge events associated with Texas A&M, but I think broadening signature events beyond the university is very forward thinking. That is a beautiful sculpture of the horses at the Bush library. We have a similar one here in Las Colinas (Irving) with the Mustangs running through a fountain. So happy to see your smiling face again.

I cannot believe we don't have 100 comments on this excellent blog post already on signature events for College Station. I'm definitely pulling the handle on flagging this one for the feature. The great photo alone should make it qualify. What is it with my fellow Rainers? You'd think it was the beginning of a three day weekend or something!! This must be what they call a slow news day or slow reader day. They just don't know what they are missing!!

Our central location can handle it! Bryan deserves congratulations for Texas Reds, and College Station should take a turn.

I'm hoping they can come up with something that pleases locals AND attracts folks from Houston, Austin and Waco.

Sondra

We relly enjoyed the Texas Reds event this year, especially Jerry Jeff Walker...don't think I have seen him perform in over 30 years. Anyway the event has continued to grow in Bryan. I haven't seen the actual dollar numbers yet..... as to whether or not the city lost or made it.  I am sure they are going through growing pains.  Hope it survives and thrives.
