PalinGovernor Sarah Palin of Alaska is going to be the next Vice President of the United States.

I have a friend in Ohio who just called me at 10.30 this morning and told me the Governor is backstage at McCain's rally in Ohio.

Just wait untill you see this woman's record! Just wait till you hear her speak!

If you weren't fully on board with McCain before this, you will be now.

I just hope my sources are correct.

Simon - This would be a really interesting choice for McCain.  I had heard of Ms. Palin from my AR friend Jesse Clifton in Fairbanks.  I think he once referred to her as "hot".

With McCain's age, and little to no experience for Palin, yes, this is an interesting choice considering she'd be just a heartbeat away from the presidency. Hmmmmmmmm.

Simon- No gray hair she must be young and inexperienced, or she dyes her hair to "cover something up" LMAO I heard he was going for the 1st female to ever be a VP candidate to rival Obama being the 1st mixed (he's not black, sorry everyone who keeps saying he is, just mixed lol) Presidential candidate from a major political party lol. I thought for this election being a good speaker was a bad thing :-\ Dang politics are confusing.

Jason- She's definitly better looking than any of the female politicans I have seen so far... But I am sure TX could have some sexy ones down there atleast a mayor or something :-D lol

I have never heard of her, but would like to see what she is about.

I news stations this morning were projecting it to be Pawlenty.  I was personally pulling for another.  I don't know much about Sarah Palin, but I will educate myself now. Thanks

Simon:  You've been promoting this possibility for some time now. Congrats to your assessments and I think that the GOP will really like her.  I, too have been researching her record as her name had begun to surface more heavily over the past couple of months.

This will certainly sure up some of the disaffected Hillary voters. This should sure up much of the conservative base who are still holding out. You know I was one of them for a very long time.

We will really like her conservative and reform approach to policy. She will bring enthusiasm and certainly more executive experience than Senator Obama on top of his ticket does. I think we will have a real winner and I will be proud to call......

Sarah Palin our next Vice President!  I also must send out a big thank you and job well done to Senator McCain. He has infuriated me on more than a few occasions and I was sincerely concerned with his pick but that's all over now and it's time to say thank you Senator McCain. Now let's bring victory on November 4, 2008

Simon:  This will make for some very interesting campaigning during he next two months.  I wonder... or I am even guessing that McCain thinks this will help him get more of the disappointed Hillary Clinton supporters.  I am guessing it will have a minimal effect on that portion of the electorate.

Simon,

My wife has been pulling for Gov. Palin for some time now. She has done alot of research on her and likes what the Gov. has done in Alaska. She seems pretty no nonsense and does not go for back room BS.

You're right!

I love it.  I know nothing about her but how smart to get a female VP to show how serious he is about courting Hillary's voters.  I don't know how much of an impact this will have but it will be interesting.

I was personally hoping for Mitt Romney but he'll be on the trail for McCain anyway.

Jason - nice to know I beat Yahoo. I also beat CBS, ABC and as far as I can tell was about the same time as Fox and NBC! :)

Chris - there is a difference between no experience - 120 days or so of being in Congress and never have run anything - to a two year Governor! Also, the VP IS on the job training! Secondly I have never had a problem with Obama being a good and inspiring speaker. the problem is he doesn't say anything!!

10:17am • #19

I think this will be definitely confirmed in the next 45 minutes.  My initial reaction is that this is totally awesome.  Any "bump" that Obama had after lastnight just got erased.

I had heard her mentioned before and the experience was somewhat of a question.  However she does have administrative experience as a governor and she was previously on the oil and gas commission for the state of Alaska.  Her experience in the energy field should be a big plus.

All in all I love it!

Why did anyone ever question Obama's experience?  Palin was mayor of a town with 8,471 people and Governor of the 3rd least populated state for 20 months.  Anyone think this sounds like a double standard?

Linda - I hope you do!

Sindee - those who love the country!

Thanks for the feature Mike. I will give you lots of insight over the next few days. But how about this. The previous Governor of Alaska went out and bought a jet. The first thing she did when she got into office was to send someone out to take a picture of it. Then she put it up on e-bay and made a profit on it!!!!!

Simon - Around 4am I saw a blurb mentioning something about AK and VP (might have been Yahoo!) but since I didn't click on it to verify, you get the prize of #1.  I did a quick search on this woman and she's the whistleblower in AK......so I have heard of her.  At least I know she's honest and ethical.  Too bad she's on the wrong ticket.  >:-)

Oh !  I like her!

I just watched Governor Palin in her first speech in Ohio as John McCain's pick for his running mate.  It was the first time I have heard her speak and I am impressed.

Today two things happened - first Senator McCain picked a young, bright and tough woman as a running mate.  (which was accurately predicted weeks ago by Simon).  And second, all the media is talking about Sarah Palin rather than the events of the DNC yesterday.

Well done Senator McCain - and well done, Simon

I second Ted's opinion. She was impressive for the first time in the national media spotlight.

Already the MSNBC pundits are questioning her experience, after all, they point out, McCain is 72 years old, is she really ready to step in when he goes T.O.? Of course, she does have more executive experience than Obama, she was a mayor and is a governor (with as many years experience as governor as Obama has senator, but has spent less time away from the job).

12:26pm • #34

I love her!  She is confident, smart and fiesty - The republicans #2 is more qualified than the dems #1 - and although 80% of down syndrome babies are aborted, the thought never crossed her mind - calls him "perfect'.

she is a lifetime member of the NRA

her husband is in the steel workers union

Nice job, Senator McCain, I'm thrilled

Well, since you invoked my initials, I feel compelled to respond.  The reality is that Palin does not have much experience.  Neither does Obama.  Whether she has more experience than Obama or not depends on who you're talking to.  Even if she does, it's negligible and I don't really think it matters.  We have had Presidents with less experience than either who went on to be successful.  Her vision of the future will mean a lot more to me (and hopefully to everyone else) than her years in office, just as Obama's vision means a lot more than his years in office.  If these people were running for US Totalitarian where they made every decision, then perhaps experience would weigh in more.  But the wise ones gather input from numerous trusted advisors in determining direction.

Already Obama's big smoke blow is forgotten - she certainly appears to be a winner and since the Dems are already sniping at her, you know they're concerned about her credentials as an ethical fighter against corruption and pork barrels. I was pulling for Romney but I think this will go down even better in may circles. Talk about history being made! Nice.

2:05pm • #43

As for taking the experience issue off the table:

It is pretty audacious for the Obama campaign to say that Governor Palin is not qualified to be Vice President. She has a record of accomplishment that Senator Obama simply cannot match. Governor Palin has spent her time in office shaking up government in Alaska and actually achieving results - whether it's taking on corruption, passing ethics reform or stopping wasteful spending and the ‘bridge to nowhere.' Senator Obama has spent his time in office running for president.

As many of you know, my radio producer and friend is an African American (he prefers American who is black!) who told my audience on the air that he would be voting for Obama simply because he is black. I just received this unsolicited e-mail from him.

"I'm still voting Obama, but he's gonna lose. Mccain's gonna take 57 to 60% of the vote."

Simon - I agree and I stand corrected.  When you first mentioned Governor Palin, I felt the choice would waive our complaint that Obama was young and inexperienced.  lemmings free

What Senator McCain (and you) has done is declare that youth and inexperience was an issue for the primary season.  Now it is time to talk about issues and policies. (and by the way, the Obama camp is looking rediculous today complaining about Palin not having experience.  I would make a comment about the pot calling the kettle... well you know, and this is a lemmings free zone)

68 days to go - a mere 97,920 hours - use them wisely.

I can hardly wait for the Palin/Biden debate.  Should be fun.

Sarah Palin found out that her child would be born with Down's Syndrome when she was in her fourth month of pregnancy and could have aborted the baby. She believes her child is perfect and a "gift from God."

Every baby is a blessing.

This is quite a juxtaposition to Obama who voted "present"- the coward's way out- about voting on late term abortions in Iliinois, even after ob nurses testified with PICTURES about  late term babies that were born ALIVE after botched abortions. He turned "a blind eye" and showed no emotion about this infanticide.

He is also quoted as saying he "would not want HIS daughters PUNISHED" with a baby - should they get "in trouble."

I also would venture a guess that she doesn't keep company with the likes of Rev. Wright, Terrorist Bill Ayres and hasn't funnelled 14 million dollars to the likes of convicted Tony Rezko!

She's a breath of fresh air- and just what the ticket needed.

From everything I've read in the last few hours about Governer Palin she sounds like a wonderful woman with a strong sense of ethics.  (I'm ignoring the investigation going on right now about her staff member asking for the firing of an officer because the officer was in a custody battle with Palins sister)

My question is this:  Senator McCain is 72 years old today.  If he should pass away while in office, is she ready to lead this nation?

Doubtful.  That scares me.

Kris and Aaron - you worry about our VP pick being ready to replace Senator McCain if necessary ? And the alternative is placing Senator Obama with no, zero, nada, zip  executive experience in charge NOW as the lead candidate on the ticket ?

Besides - have you met John McCain's mother? at 93 she can whip both of you and me into the bargain.  He seems to have good genes for longevity.

It is sweet of you to care but all indications are that Governor Palin could do the job just fine if necessary, thank you very much.  She leads with principles and solid core beliefs - not opinion polls.  She seems to be on the right side of most of the confrontations she has faced as Governor.  Read up on this unusual lady before you make up your mind - and come back and let us know what you think.

Wikipedia article <here> as a starting point for your convenience.

applauseEnvironment? important -but oil is more important for the nation right now - favors drilling in ANWR.  State (with her leadership) is running $40 billion natural gas pipeline to help with alternate transportation fuel.

Iraq - her son is US Army shipping out to Iraq in September.  Says as mother of son in Iraq and as Commander of Alaska National Guard - John McCain is the man she wants as Commander-in-Chief.  (by the way, she visited wounded Alaska troops from Iraq in Germany. To my knowledge she spent her time with troops not playing basketball.

Abortion - she is pro-life and lives it.  Her youngest son has Downs Syndrome - detected before birth, she refused to abort her child, knowing he would have special needs all his life. Remarkable story.

Unions - she is former union member, her husband is current Steel Workers Union member. (five kids, 20 year marriage so far)

Reformer - opposed corruption and unethical behavior in high state and party officials - at risk of her own career. Has opposed corruption tied to oil.  Running natural gas pipeline (not favored by oil companies).

Earmarks - stopped construction of Bridge to Nowhere.  Said Thanks but no thanks to federal monies - told feds that if her state wanted a bridge, they would build it themselved.

Has rebated state oil revenues to citizens to offset gas prices.

Not only member of NRA but avid outdoorswomen and hunter (has her own sea plane)

This lady has demonstrated that she not only talks the talk - she walks the walk.  She keeps the people of her state first in her mind when she makes decisions.

Simon, I think this is a great move!!  Ted, you said it.  People whining about experience sound like a bunch of hypocrites to me.

After all, look what McCain is up against.  A ton of voters that are going to vote for Obama JUST because he is black.  SO, there MIGHT be some that will vote for McCain, just to put a woman in the white house.  Brilliant move!!

Simon I just heard her speak and all I can say is WOW.  I cannot wait for a debate between her and Obama-Biden.   She will beat them hands down.  She will force the Democrats to address the real problems our country faces.  I heard her tonight being interviewed on MSNBC and I was blown away by her intelligence especially regarding our energy problems and solutions.  I think she is smarter than McCain, Obama, Michelle and Biden all rolled into one and SHE should be running for President.  McCain has put the best interests or our country first by choosing someone like her to be his VP.  I think he chose her because she's smart, capable and has solutions to our problems and definately did not choose her because she is a woman.

One thing that I am disappointed about is that many men are just referring to the fact that she is easy on the eyes.  As this is always a bonus, not only for women but men as well.  It isn't what is on the outside we should be looking at, it is what she stands for and her convictions.  Myself, I like her and I think she will make a good compliment to McCains experience.

Ted--- In response to your comment directed at me, I think she is a "rock star" if you are on the Right.

She certainly has a very bright national future ahead of her if she gets cleared of the cronyism and abuse of power she is being accused of in "Troopergate."

However, as an independant who voted for McCain in 2000, like many independant voters, its troubling for her to be a heartbeat from the presidency.

McCain and others are telling us that the war on terror and Iran are still among our greatest challenge.  She admittedly has zero foreign policy experience.  She has a few months to learn the world.

Obama is clearly lacking in this area as well.   However, he has had an 18 month campaign to get somewhat familiar and he chose a seasoned expert to ride shotgun with him in Biden.

I am glad to hear about McCain's 95 yr old mother.   That's a great story.   Two Saturdays ago, I went to the surprise 80th birthday party for the mother of two of my closest friends growing up.

My friend Scott and his brother Richard, regrettably weren't there.   Scott died last year of bladder cancer at 43 and Richard has terminal brain cancer at 50 and has weeks to live.

Their two sisters are still alive.  Maybe the genetics you are counting on for McCain will serve them better than they did my two friends.

The presidency is a stressful job.   The VP, historically, is a fairly meaningless advisory position.  But it means a lot if the President doesn't make it through his term.

Sarah Palin may be the greatest 20-month Governor in history but, in my opinion, she is not, and will not be ready by next year to be Commander in Chief.

It's only my opinion as an independant voter.  However, I have many centrist Republican friends that share this opinion as well and would have loved to seen Romney or Guiliani.   As the polls are now showing, she is a rock star to the Right but a tough sell in the middle.
