Design To Market

My daughter and I sat yesterday evening staring with rapt attention at the photo of the African child we were soon to sponsor.  The plight of children in poor third world countries has been a big topic in our extended family over the past 2 years as my sister and her husband have gone though the rigors of an international adoption and look ahead with joy to the time that they will receive their new Ethiopian baby girl.

My thirteen year old has been profoundly affected by their experience and in her teenager way has set out to make the world a better place.  She felt that we too could make a difference for a child that has less than we do.  Our solution was to select a child worlds apart that could benefit from our assistance but that would also mutually make an impact on our lives.  We selected a 12 year old girl from Malawi and have already started plans for letter writing and e-mailing.  She like my daughter is an athlete.  We assume that in her village participating in sports takes on a very different flavor than in our suburb of Cincinnati.  But with plans of a letter already in her head, my daughter knows she will soon figure this out.

To tie this back to staging and my reason for posting this blog...our $28 monthly sponsorship is being funded by the hard work of a Cincinnati Stager (me!) and her paper route owning 13 year old daughter.  We have committed to pooling our resources to sponsoring this child and we both know that as a picture is hung and as a newspaper is thrown we can think fondly of the profound effect we hope to have on a teenager's life an ocean away.

We set up our sponsorship through www.savethechildren.org .

What a great way to teach your child about giving instead of receiving.   I hope they keep up the communications for ever and one day get a chance to meet.

Jo: What a wonderful thing you are doing, both for your daughter and for that teenager in Malawi. You are very generous. My husband and I make micro-loans through an organization www.Kiva.org . As the money gets paid back, as it almost always does (occassionally political strife in an area delays payments) we loan it to others throughout the world. Thanks for posting this. It is good to be reminded that there is always more we can do.

This is a wonderful cause and a life lesson for your daughter. You are an inspiration! Have you posted the link to this organization on your website? I just saw another staging company here in DFW who supports a local organization with a % of proceeds from each staging job going to the shelter. I think the idea is brilliant Jo!

Michelle,

I am impressed!  I have heard about micro loans and have been so interested in them.  I had no idea that I knew someone that was involved with this wonderful concept.  How rewarding it must be as an entrepreneur to help people in other countries as they work to create businesses.

Jo: We started out loaning $2,000 through www.Kiva.org. $100 here, $210 there, until we loaned out the whole $2,000. The people who ask for loans are not asking for very much. In the 2 years we have been doing it, we have loaned out that $2,000 almost 4 times! Everyone works really hard to pay back their loans. There is a lot of peer and community pressure to do so, so that the money can be re-lent in the community. 75% of our loans go to women, 25% to men. I figure men have an advantage in most cultures, so we put a little more emphasis on helping women. Repayment has been a little slow from our Kenya loans as they have had so many political problems in the past year. But I have no doubt they will repay when they can. It is fun to watch the money accumulating as it is repaid.

We also donate through www.Heifer.org, and donate farm animals, bee hives, chickens, etc. in both the US and abroad. Even though I am a meat eater, I try not to donate something that is going to get eaten, just critters that produce things that can be eaten or used, like wool, milk, eggs and honey. We give all our neices and nephews the chance to choose what they would like to have donated in their names. They really like that part.

Michelle,

You are my hero!  I just made my first Microloan through www.kiva.org .  I loaned $75 to a woman in Peru.  I look forward to watching her success!

Thanks for the great idea.  Jo

Michelle,

You should start a team on Kiva for stagers!  If you do, count me in.

I noticed that kiva.org was selected as a recipient of a large donation from American Express.  It is great to see the power of these loans helping entrepreneurs around the world.

Hi Jo! My family supports a boy in Kenya. It is a wonderful thing for our children to see. I am going to check out kiva.org to see what we can do there. Thanks for the post, and thanks Michelle for that info!
