Opening Day for Michigan Football Tomorrow

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Missy Caulk TEAM

Kick Off for 2008 !!Opening today for the Michigan Wolverines is tomorrow. There is so much excitement living in Ann Arbor and a college town. Even if expectations are low around the country we are looking forward to a new era at University of Michigan.

We have a new coach, Rich Rodrigues, who runs the spread offence which is new and different at this Big 10 school, steeped in a running tradition. "Coach Rod" as he is called is the son of a coal miner from West Virginia, with blue-collar roots, he became a head coach at age 24.

Coach Rod is still not saying who will be the starting quarter-back. My guess is he will play both of them. Nick Sheridan is from Saline, who was the QB when my son Andrew played at Saline. Nick is a walk-on Red Shirt sophomore is competing with Steven Threet, from Adrian for the opening job.  We open against Utah who also runs a spread offense and has their seasoned QB returning. In the past, Michigan has had a hard time defending against the spread offence, but now that we are defending it every day in practice, we should be much improved.

The Stadium is under construction with 49 suites (luxury boxes) not completed.  Construction is due to be completed in 2010 and I have been watching the cranes and the steel around the Stadium all summer.

Here is a great air tour of what it will look like when completed.

The fansFans are asked to come early, due to the construction. Of course, all my kids and their girlfriends and boyfriends are going early like at 8:00 for a 3:30 kick-off. Christa will be running through the house, yelling, "get up, it's game day" with the fight song playing in the background. About the only days of the year, she is the first one up.

The Victors Walk will begin 2 hours before the game, as the Wolverines walk 200 yards from the U of M. public safety building to stadium tunnel entrance and into the locker room.

So even with the QB situation not known, a stadium under construction, a new offense, and losing to Appalachian State last year in our season opener, this is still Michigan.

One of THE most winning college football schools in the country, full of pomp and tradition. A place where we sing, "Hail to the Victors" the best fight song known in the country and love every minute of it.

 GO BLUE!!

What a perfect day for the game.  My twins will be there, they didn't leave until 11:00 from home, didn't know about having to get there early.  I think this is their first Michigan game, they've gone to many Lions games.  Nate works at UofM hospital as a tech on the cardio intensive care floor, he got the tickets from a co-worker who has season tickets and couldn't make the game, lucky boy!  They both played football all through high school, I used to love going to cheer them on. Here's to the opening win!

Jeff....it's been awhile since we've tasted a National Championship!  But they are ever so sweet when it happens.  My first game was with Harry Oliver kicking a 51 (or something like that) against Missy's Unversity of Michigan for the win in 1980 (yes I'm old!).  Harry passed away last year after a battle with cancer.  If there are any "domers" out there; here's the UTube of Harry's kick.

Well, it is a new offense, new starters, and a bummer. But, I only hope it is not a year like ND had last year. I just don't believe in writing the season off, after the first game, with two inexperienced QB's, like some have on their blogs ( Ann Arbor blogs) Plus the defense didn't step up until the 2nd half.

There is NOTHING like a good home game in the BIG HOUSE.  I just wish they would have started out stronger.... but like rookies in Real Estate; you gotta start someplace...

Missy - It sound like things didn't go so well for your team, the season isn't over so things could turn around.  I have to confess I don't understand the game but know many who are passionate about the game and your family is certainly one of them.

I'd love to hear what the Ann Arbor sports headlines were Sunday morning. All kidding aside this is only his first season, but this is Meeeechigan Football.

MISSY - Another unfortunate start to the season for Big Blue.  I watched it for a while, but they really couldn't seem to do anything on offense.  I'm hoping that this is because they are still adapting to Rich Rodriguez's offense, and because they played a lot of first-year players.  Let's hope that week 2 brings better results.

My alma mater, LSU, also played last weekend. I heard they had an unfortunate demise in their opening game last year. I hate to say it but I'm a huge SEC fan! Always have been, always will be.
