The Happy Sumo in Westminster Colorado sucks!

We decided to try the new Happy Sumo that opened at The Orchard in Westminster at 144th Avenue this last Friday evening.  It was somewhat busy and we had four people with us including my wife and two kids.  After being informed by the hostess in an icy tone that it would be a 30 minute wait, we took our pager and waited, and waited, and waited while I watched other four tops , three tops, two tops and even one larger party who had come after us be called for their tables.  After 55 minutes I asked one of the four giggling hostesses (all fashionably dressed in black) when they thought we would be called.

She looked at her seating list (and I got a glimpse as well), I could see that we had been passed over by about 6-7 parties, and then said in an icy tone that it would be another 10 minutes.  At this point we decided that we would be better off dining somewhere that actually gave a rip about our business and customer service, I handed the pager back to the hostess an said no thank you we would be leaving.  Her only response was her best 'runway model' sarcastic sneer 'sorry'.

We wound up stopping by a Good Times burger place on the way home and had great service actually with a smile!

Thank God I didn't have business clients with me or it wasn't an important lunch or business dinner as is normally the case.  This time we only had an evening meal ruined and dissapointed and hungry kids.

I guess the problem is that Happy Sumo is the only sushi restaurant up north in this area.  Hopefully that will change soon as the dinner market is in desperate need of a sushi place that actually has service, good prices and good food!

My goodness, Happy Sumo is my new favorite restaurant. I'm sorry you let a bad hostess experience allow you to write such a negative review, I mean come on hostess come and go more than customers. Not that it isn't important, but to hate a place just because of a teenage kid? But the food is amazing and the service I've ever gotten is fantastic. I'm so glad they are here, plus being a vip is amazing. Westminster needed a good restaurant!!

Hi Lisa,

I considered that my experience might have been unique.  However, it wasn't just one hostess.  Additionally I ran across www.yelp.com and saw a number of reviews that were similar to mine.

It's a shame really I was hoping for a positive experience, but it looks like well just have to keep driving to Arvada and Boulder for our sushi.

Have you tried the Zen Asian Bistro?  Thought the Sushi was very good there.  11940 Bradburn.

I too like Happy Sumo, my husband and I usually go earlier in the day and the service is quite good, it's also a different group of service people and a lot less crowded. It's possible there may have been other customers overlooked as well, it's always good to let the manager know about poor customer service in order to weed out these types.

I understand what it's like to get a bad first impression though, you don't want to go back no matter.

Hibachi in the Westminster Promenade is very good and the atmosphere and customer service are great too.

We have found the Happy Sumo to be one of our new favorite haunts.  We have usually had very good and timely service which has been friendly for the most part.

Unfortunately, the last time we went, we took a friend who'd never been and because of the unexpected bad service and wait time, she likely will never go back.  Had this been our first or second time, we also would not have gone back.  The person who mentioned not letting one snotty teenage hostess make a person feel negatively is really missing the boat here.

When I dine out and spend 50$ and upward, I expect all of the service to be friendly and timely.  I expect if a mistake in seating is made that it is corrected and if not, I too would consider the place not worth my time.

I think most establishments that hire teenage, or young adult help need to be sure that said employees have a reasonable work ethic and treat the staff with respect and courtesy at ALL times without exception.  Why would anybody go where they aren't made to feel welcome?  There are far too many options.

That said, the Happy Sumo does give a comment card and request feedback and people should be honest about their entire dining experience.  In times of touch economy, this place and others should be stepping up to the plate to get all the business they can!
