North Beach StreetIf you are tired of taking I-95 going north to Palm Coast, try Beach Street instead. After a mile of driving along the Intracoastal lined with magnificent riverfront mansions, you veer west and find yourself in a tree line road with branches arching above the roadway, which put you in a shade in the middle of summer heat. It is only 40 MPH speed limit, but it does not bother you. You would not want to drive faster anyway, you may want to drive slower and enjoy the scenery. But what is it on your right hand? Let's stop here and check it out. Heck with Palm Coast, we'll get there next time.

This is Tomoka State Park, right here north of Ormond Beach. This is a large park - over 2,000 acres. The park boasts 12 miles of shoreline. The activities include Boating, Canoeing, fishing, picnicking, camping....

The park is noted for its live oak hammock with arching limbs covered in Spanish moss. Over 160 species of birds have been noted. You can see manatees, occasionally a bottlenose dolphin, alligators are in abundance (though I failed to spot a single one). THere are raccoons, bobcats, white-tailed deer and otters... I only saw a tortoise.

The park borders Tomoka River, which got the name from Timacua Native Americans, who once lived here, living off fish-filled lagoons. Today, the river is popular for canoeing, fishing, and boating. The park protects a variety of wildlife habitats and endangered species. Tomoka is a bird-watcher's paradise, especially during the spring and fall migrations. You can stroll a one-half mile nature trail through a hardwood hammock that was once an indigo field.Tomoka State Park

Jon - enjoyed your slide show.  I was just getting the feel of the Indians living by the water, washing in the lake, fishing for their dinner....stashing their fish in their ice chest....wait a minute, was that you?  :)

No, this was a local guy, who this time walked away with nothing, but this was one of the hottest days, just over 90F, wasn't really comfotable out.

Florida outings are better in October, than in August

Jon, Mesquite is also uncomfortable in August, 110 today - I am hiding out inside the house.

When buyers want to look at houses - I am tempted to say, 'can't I just tell you about them?'

I have 2 kids and grandkids who live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast - I keep watching the weather channel.

With Gustav aiming at them, can they go to visit you even at 110F?

I am trying to get them to go up to Jackson.  One daughter, husband and kids are visiting family in Chicago for the weekend.  Her husband is a Seabee, expecting the call to get on base as soon as Gustav hits the Gulf of Mexico.  Then they won't let him leave.  The other daughter is in Ocean Springs with no car and the 2 dogs.  Her boyfriend's dad is an AF Hurricane Hunter - he says it looks bad - get out of town.

So I am trying to send each money and get them coordinated and go north.  Heck with the house.  They live close to the water.  But they need to make a decision (where to go) before the hotels up north are sold out.

They haven't been through a hurricane without Mom and Dad.  And Annie's husband will be stuck on base.

Even going East is OK. It is a already a dead season here, Labor Day is the last busy weekend until Biketoberfest, and hotels are empty. Staying during a major Hurricane is not worth it, as even when the safety is ot a concern, ually the power is off, and staying in the heat and humidity without power, no fridge, is very tiring.

We live in a condo, underground power cables make it much easier, the transformers do not get blown away, like when they are on the poles. The building is 3 y.o., everything to latest codes, should take Category 3, and we never had that strong Hurricanes in this area (Charley was Cat 4 when landed, but by the time it crossed the State west to east, it lost power and came to Daytona as a borderline Cat 1, and still ripped off a lot of roofs, and caused a lot of damage).

Cat 3 is too powerful to play games with. Let them board up the house and leave.
