Sarah's family moved to Skagway, Alaska, when she was 2 months old, and her father took a teaching job there.Her mother, Sally, took the family to church, and her father, Chuck, instilled in her a love for sports and competition. Today, Palin's parents stay busy hunting, fishing, gold-mining and caring for grandchildren. Chuck is a retired teacher, and Sally worked as a school secretary.

Elected in 2006, she's Alaska's first female governor and the youngest governor elected in the state.

She is the second female Vice Presidential candidate representing a major American political party (the first was Geraldine Ferraro). After being selected as the runner up in the 1984 Miss Alaska contest, Palin served two terms on the Wasilla, Alaska City Council from 1992 to 1996, was elected mayor of Wasilla in 1996, and ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor in 2002. Her family moved to Alaska when Sarah was an infant.
She refers to her husband, Todd, as the "First Dude." He's worked as a commercial fisherman and as a production operator on the North Slope for BP. He enjoys snowmobiling and has won the Tesoro Iron Dog, billed as the world's longest snowmobile race, four times.
