Campaign Election Signs vs. Open House Signs

Yes, this is somewhat of a rant.  OK, I take that back, it is a rant – not somewhat!  It appears that everywhere you turn there are political campaign signs popping up all over the place.  These are a blight on our landscape.  My senses are assaulted and I am forced to look at these everywhere I turn through election day.

As if that’s not bad enough, now you’re getting all of those pre-recorded messages telling you how great the politician is; what they’ve done; and, of course, the vote for me crap.  Don’t you just love it!  Yeah, I’m sure as much as a stick in the eye.

Many of the local municipalities here have cracked down majorly on roadside signage, especially for those of Open Houses.  We have many that actually go around on the weekend and will pull Open House signs while you are trying to do one and then we wonder why no one or so few showed.  Yet, our roadsides are littered with campaign signage.  Why?  Because our politicians, legislators, lawmakers, whatever you wish to call them preclude these from the laws.  I guess that they feel this is there inalienable right.  They must be better than you and me.  Remember, they are serving the public’s interest – or are they really?  It’s not like they don’t have enough privileges.

Yet, our signs get picked up and tossed away.  There is one municipality that is at least working with us and is allowing us to put our Open House signage out from Friday through Sunday.  It is only hoped that others will follow suit.  Our local Realtor® Board has sent proposals to many cities, but with very little response.  Yet, when election time comes around guess whose support they want?

I think the Do Not Call list is great.  I detest getting these unwanted sales calls and do in fact file complaints on the DNC website at www.donotcall.gov.  But again, our politicians thought they should be precluded from this.  As a Realtor®, I can’t make calls to expired listings or FSBO’s without having a customer that is interested in their property.  I can’t play the old game of Dialing for Dollars.

Yet, our trusted politicians thought well of themselves so much so that they excluded themselves from any Do Not Call rules and regulations.  I guess that they felt that their campaigning is a public service that will only enhance my life.  Not that it may be an intrusion of sorts at all.

It must be great to be a politician, because it appears that we continually find in all types of legislation, items that either are beneficial to them and/or their campaign contributors.  It appears that even though we’ve elected them, we’ve become second class citizens.  I resent that fact!  How dare they?  I don’t know how we get around this except for possibly keeping a more watchful eye on our politicians and when they stray, simply vote someone else into office.  We really do need to send a message.

Marc - Agreed.  I have never used one of these signs in my yard, for multiple reasons.  It's good to see a new post from you!

Marc ... I *SO* agree with you. I have lost so many open house signs. The county comes along and takes them, and like you said ... you wonder why no one is showing up. They can't give us three hours on a Sunday afternoon, but the political signs are everywhere. It has the opposite intended political effect as far as I'm concerned.

It is crazy how they police us for trying to make a living, Someone had the nerve to stick a political sign in my yard!

The politicians are a "special class" who see they take of themselves and the citizenry secondly. The signs are an eyesore. It is amazing how the winners seem to get the signs pulled for the "runoff or general election" and the losers...well.

These are the same people that have their own healthcare system... exempt from ours

......... get paid full salary AFTER they leave office.........

........... get to vote on their OWN raises..........

STOP THE INSANITY [or maybe we should just run for office].

ewww, i think i need to take a shower after that last thought, yuck!

Marc, I agree 100%.  They make their own rules as they see fit. No rules apply to them.  Whey do we get to deduct intrest off of our taxes for a second home?  Because 99% of the politicians have two homes, one in DC and one in their home state and tada, a law comes into existence.

The signs are disgusting, not eco friendly, wasteful and plain old offensive I think!

Marc -  I'm tired of this, I really am.  The comments above mine will give some semblance of the reaction to what is going on, but until WE create and implement a different way... they will keep on strolling along.  I've made a decision to once again not vote for either party when election comes around.  Once again, I'll vote for what I believe and it just so happens that isn't either of the two candidates, one of which will win.  This two party system has to go, no doubt about that in my mind.  Political life was NEVER meant as an occupation but we've become enslaved to that idea.  Hell, if you vote for anyone but Oback or John... you are wasting your vote.  That's the mindset.  My mindset is that if I vote for either of them, I'm truly wasting my vote.  Sorry, but this thinly veiled monopoly is out of fuel.  Revolutions often have a bad undertone... but we are in need of one real bad right now.  They have provided what I think to be an interesting election, makes me want to study law.   I'm going Richard Pryor on their asses, none of the above.  I'll vote, just not for them...

Russel - Agreed!  But it's well overdue that needs to be changed.

Jason - Thanks!  It's just been so hard to write between going to Bloggers Connect; then trying to catch up for 2 weeks; and, then spending the last two weeks in Broker's class.

Sharon - I also have to agree with you about the effect of the political signs.  It so detracts from our landscape.

Darin - WOW!  Without your permission?!?  Now, that is freakin' ballsy!!

Gary - Yes, I've noticed that as well.  But also have noticed that it takes months for them to be removed after an election.  Geez, maybe they should be fined for leaving them past a certain date.

Chris - It's funny that you went that way.  I was thinking the same while writing my post, but had the same reaction as you and thought best to leave it out.  Many have told me that I should run for office, but I don't want to lower myself to that level.

Audrey - OMG, I honestly never thought of that connection, but there has to be some validity there.  Surely, it's not just a coincidence!

Jason - Missed you bud!  What burns my butt is this freakin' multi billion dollar tab for this election.  There has to be some major restructuring to the election laws.  This has gotten so freakin' out of hand.  Can you imagine what that kind of money could provide for those in need and the rest of us.  The process has gotten out of hand as well.  As you say, the system does need to be changed.  It just so archaic & really only serves the 'ins.'

No wonder the wealth disparity is greater than it has ever been and continually widens on a daily basis.  It used to be that if the corporation did well, everyone in the employ of such did well.  That's not so anymore.  The corporation works for the shareholders and those employed in such are just eaten up and spit out.  The fabric of our society is tattered and being rent.

Jennifer - In a heartbeat!!

Marc, I used to get frustrated quite often when I lived in CA but I must say moving to NC and living in a smaller town we don't get much of anything in the way of phone calls and signs pop up only when we are very close to the election.  They are a blight that is for sure!  One thing, I registered Independent so I don't get nearly the annoying calls or any mailings.  You might try that!

You have to love these politicians.  You hit the nail on the head.  Many of them do think they are better than us and above the law.  I voted against most of the incumbents this week in the primaries, however most of them did get re-elected anyway.

Diane - I am registered as an Independent, that has not stopped the incumbents from bothering the heck out of me.  I wouldn't mind if they were decent, but there is especially one in particular who is a horses' _ _ _!!

Rob - Sadly I saw that as well.  But we can only hope that they will be upset in Nov.

I hear you, my friend.  I hear you.  The same townships that steal open house signs that are going to be out only for a couple of hours will allow the road to be littered for weeks with this crap.

Karen - Yeah, it burns my butt also!!  I don't like being considered a 2nd class citizen.  They surely aren't better than us.
