As the summer winds down this Labor Day Weekend, many people on Long Island will be going to the beach, possibly for the last time until next year.  Being that there are so many beaches to choose from on Long Island, most of us have no reason to visit any other beach unless we are going someplace on vacation.  Rising gas prices have caused many to take "staycations" this year, rather than traveling.  My wife and kids and I recently ventured a little further than usual, and took a short trip to Point Pleasant Beach in New Jersey.

Long Islanders go to the beach, but if you live in New Jersey, you go "down the shore." I'm not sure what the difference is, but I don't want the people of New Jersey to think that I'm not cool, so I'll conform for the purposes of this post.  This trip down the shore was special because it was the first time that we've ever gone away as an extended family.

On Saturday morning, we all woke up early, got the kids ready, and actually got on the road only 5 minutes later than our goal (which had to have been some kind of record).  It usually takes us much longer to get going for one reason or another.  We set out early to compensate for what was sure to be a vast amount of traffic.  Much to our surprise, the ride was actually very easy, and we arrived at Point Pleasant Beach earlier than expected - a great start to this mini-vacation!

Having never been down the shore before, and being that we arrived earlier than the rest of my family, we took the time to walk on the boardwalk and explore a bit with the kids.  It didn't take long to realize why people love to spend time down the shore.  After all, with a festival-like atmosphere (food, games, etc.), a white, sandy beach and the crashing ocean waves, what's not to love?  Of course, anyone who is trying to watch what they eat will find going down the shore challenging (to say the least)

While waiting for the rest of the family to show up, we sat outside in the shade and shared an order of fries.  The little one was happy because it meant that she got to dip something into ketchup, a condiment that she will eat plain if we allow it.  Go figure!  Chippy's French Fries also offered another interesting dipping idea, salt and vinegar.  It worked well with fries, and it is worth trying if you get the chance.  After spending almost $10 on a large order of fries and a drink, I realized that this was not going to be a typical day at the beach financially.

Those looking to spend a day down the shore should budget accordingly.  The parking for the day was around $20, and each adult must also pay $6.50 to get onto the beach.  Children under 5 are free, and children between 6 and 12 pay a discounted rate.  Aside from the food, there are also numerous games to be played for prizes, and an amusement park with rides.  If you really want to enjoy the day, be prepared to spend some money.  For us, it was a special occasion.  I'm not sure how families do this on a regular basis though.

After a short while, my family arrived, and we made our way down the beach.  This trip with the whole family was something that my mother had wanted to do for a while, and she made sure that everyone had a great time (especially the grandchildren).  There was no limit to the games that they could play, the rides that they could go on or the food that they could eat (as long as it didn't make them sick).

From the beach and the ocean to the boardwalk and the rides, this fun-filled day was something that none of us will forget anytime soon.  I'm glad that I live on Long Island and can enjoy "regular" days at the beach whenever I want.  I'm also glad that I'm close enough to New Jersey to take a fairly easy trip down the shore to enjoy the type of days that memories are made of.  This was the first, but certainly not the last extended family outing that we will partake in.

At the end of the day, we all went back to my sister's house in New Jersey and stayed over (six adults and four kids)Talk about a full house!

In the interest of time and space, the rest of the weekend will be continued in part 2.

Adam! this sounds like a blast! Talk about what memories are made of! It sounds like a wonderful day with the family and your mom sounds awesome! Way to go mom. That's the way to treat...

The beach looks beautiful. Do you find shells there? We no longer find them on our Galveston sands but I'm wondering what kind of beach walking you get? During a day like that I wouldn't care one iota what kind of food there was...in fact, the junkier the better! That's a real vacation.

I'm glad you had a great time...that is so far and I will be awaiting the follow - up. Enjoy!

Sounds like you had a blast, Adam! We decided to stay home this weekend and just chill. Sometimes...that is just what I need to refuel. I came back from my last vacation exhausted. :-) Oh...and $10 for fries and a drink...MAN! How much do the hotdogs cost? Glad you got away with the family, buddy! GBU!

Adam, I have been going "down the shore" all of my life.  This expression extends to South Philadelphia too!  We never go to the beach, down to the beach, down to the shore... only "down the shore"!  It's great fun and I think the sand is the softest and the atmosphere the most family friendly!  I love the new Jersey shore!

Adam - I've been going "down the shore" since I was born and I have always loved it.  The Jersey Shore sort of goes in and out of fashion for some folks but I have been there every year of my life.  I loved it when I was a kid and when I was a teenager and I like it even more as a parent.  There are certainly more exotic or educational places to take my kids but for sheer "fun" nothing beats a few days of water-parks, rides, swimming in the ocean, crabbing, playing the "stands" to win prizes, eating some great food, flying kites on the beach after the lifeguards go home and staying in a big house with the whole family all together in one place.

As you can tell, I am a Jersey Boy all the way.

I grew up in New York City, but we went to the Jersey Shore for extended family vacations every summer when I was a kid.  There was nothing as fun as enjoying the boardwalk at Wildwood Beach with all of my cousins and extended family.  Boardwalk Fries with vinegar.... mmmmm..... still one of my favorite foods!

Sounds like you had a great time and made lots of fun memories.  Thanks for sharing!

Adam ~ It looks and sounds like you had a lot of fun; I'm sure the kids enjoyed it!  I had read this week that traffic wasn't expected to be the same as in past years, and I'm glad to hear the news was actually right about something.

I guess I take our beaches for granted. But I really don't like being in the sun =( But since so many other people really love it, this is a great post, packed full of information and suggestions. Well done  =)

Sounds like it was lots of fun! I can't imagine having to pay to go on the beach, but hey! Also, we need a post from you in the future telling us why they call it going to the shore. You have to find out now, because we are all curious.

"I'm glad that I live on Long Island and can enjoy "regular" days at the beach whenever I want. "

Adam I really enjoyed this post! We live a ways from the Gulf (Third Coast) but we have a wonderful place to swim and relax only 15 minutes from my home! And it's only $3 eac and we can take a picnic basket! What a deal!

Barton Springs Eternal!

Today is Monday so we are leaving for Barton Springs in about a half hour so I don't plan on working for the rest of the day! I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday too!

Sounds like an absolute blast, Adam. You are fortunate to have water so close. It's about 5 to 6 hours from my door to the Pacific, and I wish we were closer. For my money and time, nothing rivals a day at the beach. Nothing. Looking forward to part 2.

Oh, man!  Adam, you're working on the heartstrings of a Desert Rat who misses the good times "down the shore."

Sounds like a good time to me.  We went down the shore as well but the water was too damn cold to get into unless you're in a dive suit... and I tend to look like Shamu in one, so that's a no-go. haha

Adam - you were really able to convey what the trip was like. I enjoy it when members talk about their trips as well as their homes.

North of New Jersey, as you mention, it's going to "the beach", whether it's your Long Island or my Newport. Here in Florida, it's also "the beach". So New Jersey and Philadelphia go to "the shore". I wonder what the geographic boundaries of "the shore" are - and why.
