Is GUSTAV raising gas prices 20cents a gallon overnight?

I just don't understand this... was it because there is a HURRICANE named GUSTAV heading this way?  People are having to evacuate now, early, before its too late and they can't get out.  Although none of us know for certain where GUSTAV will finally hit we all recall, Katrina and RITA .. Rita hit the Texas Coast right after Katrina.

On wednesday of this past week I paid $3.36 for a gallon of gasoline.  Yesterday gasoline at the same station was $3.56..what happened that made this rapid increase?  I didnt hear that oil went up on the stock market more than $1 a barrel...  was I sleeping?

I wonder if it was because our government started talking evacuations.... people need to leave many areas along the gulf coast, Texas, Louisana, Alabama, Florida.   so the roads are packed, people are fueling up and gas prices are soaring.

Seems like GUSTAV is raising more than the tide.

Gail - Where were you able to find it so cheap?  I haven't paid less than $3.55 per gallon for awhile now, except when we went to Houston and I saw it for $3.19.

Maybe the oil companies are concerned that the refineries in the gulf may be hit badly?  I haven't heard that mentioned on CNN, but I remember during past storms that was a concern.

It's just supply and demand.  With everyone in the area filling up to get out of town, it's put a big strain on supplies.

Hi Gail,
Just 2 days ago, gas prices here were $3.59-$3.62 - now $3.79-3.82 so it's just not the area affected by Gustav.

Dear Gail,

This is just nuts! Gustav has not even arrived and he has impacted the gas prices. I guess the gas companies are just being prepared in the event of a potential disaster. I am sure they are hurting financially from such a difficult year..... of record breaking profits!?!?! LOL

I think its deplorable that the oil companies feel the need to price gouge the consumer before the 'disaster' even comes. Our gas prices went up two days before Ike even hit Galveston. Its one thing to charge a little more after a disaster because the suppliers have a very limited supply or may not be able to receive a delivery. However I feel its just wrong to start charging more well before there is a crisis. We did not even get a single drop of rain from Ike, but we got the inflated prices well in advance of his landfall.
