I'm about to have my one month anniversary here on Active Rain and I'm pretty excited.  In the past month it's like I'm learning a whole new language.  Blidgets, and widgets and postlets and snagits to name acartoon elephant few.  So I thought I'd give a word of encourage to those of you that are brand spanking new.

My mom always used the old adage:  How do you eat an Elephant?

Answer:  One bite at a time...

That's how you have to approach Active Rain.  It's like trying to jump on a moving train...a train that's picking up speed by the way.  You wonder if it's too late, to jump on...I know I did.  Well after careful deliberation (and recognizing I am a real expert now...not) I don't think it's too late.   Sure I wish I heard about AR a year or more ago.  But I didn't so here I am...

Yeah we may never catch up with all of those folks that have been here from the beginning...but that's okay.  The great thing is that most of them are willing to hold out their hand and help us on the train.

So my word of advise:

Follow the yellow brick roadDo what I did (and am still doing) Set your clocks a couple of hours earlier than usual...do not give in to the temptation to press the snooze button.  Then get on Active Rain for the purpose of reading the helpful hint blogs, tips, tech tools, watch the instructional videas and start blogging using what you learned.  It will start coming together...I promise.

Three of my favorite contributors (in case you haven't found them yet)...and some really helpful posts...it's like folowing the yellow brick road...they are actually creating it for us...(I have never met or spoken to any of them...but I can tell you that they are creating some great Karma! my friend Karma!):

Brad Andersohn:  The ActiveRain Starter Kit     (read it every day for the first few weeks, there's so much in it that until you are working with AR a bit some of it is lost, then you go back and read it again and the next level makes sense...he's got a bunch of helpful blogs for us newbies)

Jeff Turner:Real estate blog entries tagged with activerain community support by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)  (his how to videos are really helpful)

Katrina Gasset: Real Estate Blog - LongTail Keywords For Blogging, Fishing With The Right Bait On Your Active Rain Blog.   (love her simple way of explaining things)

Laurie Manny: Real Estate Blog - Do You SEO?   (just down right good info...basic stuff that probably is too basic for many but for me it really helped me start getting my head around SEO)

So thank you, thank you, thank you to these four and all of the other helpful people out there on AR.  I do really appreciate it.

Also four of my favorite tools I found through the blogs so far:

Start with Brad Andersohn's diigo blog then go set up your diigo account  www.diigo.com so you can bookmark what you are finding and how to find them again.  In the mornings sometimes I'll just surf around AR and bookmark things I know I want to read in more depth later.  Tomorrow should be quiet as it's a holiday (for most people that is) so my plan is to start going through a lot of what I bookmarked.

My picture...it's a Snagits   www.snagit.com     free 30 day trial...you'll fall in love

The scrolling tab on my sidebar...  that's a blidget from www.widgetbox.com   IT'S FREE

The listing video on my sidebar  ...that's a postlet   www.postlets.com   IT'S FREE

Oh...and one final REALLY important hint....when you are writing a long blog...make sure save it as a draft periodically.  I forgot and lost everything and had to start again.  It's kind of frustrating and totally unnecessary.

Informative post for all AR bloggers... reminds us of what we need to do, including saving long posts.  I have lost a few recently and now write them on Word and transfer them when I am ready to post.  Thank you for the helpful links!

Celeste - I can see you put some time and effort into this post. It's great seeing other members reach out to help each other.  Thanks for the mention and the links, and if you ever need anything at all, please feel free to contact me anytime.  You are the type of person who "Pays it forward"  and those of us staffed here at AR really appreciate that very much.  Thank you.  :-)

Thanks Susan, doing them in word sounds like a good idea...I know the first one I did was a little more thorough ... When that happens you have to take a deep breath, not freak out and just do it again so you can put it behind you.

Brad ...thanks for taking the time to respond...can't imagine how you actually find the time or even found the post but appreciate it.  I have bookmarked many of your blogs and refer to them often.  Also was deeply touched by "Good bye to an Angel"  That truly showed AR to be much more than real estate website.  From personal experience from sharing and support I have received this month the value goes far beyond that.

thanks

Pat, welcome to AR, I had a busy week so haven't made it to Active Rain...so just now catching up. There's so much to learn....so from one newbie to another just keep coming back and picking up one or two things, implement them and come back for more...otherwise it's too overwhelming. And best of luck.

Hey Barb,

I hate when that happens.  I can't tell you how many times it has happened to me.  I've gotten to where I simplified my passwords and i put them in my contact manager on my cell phone but under a security code so that if i ever lose my phone the user has to put an access code in to see anything hidden.  I learned with any system no one can help you with the password as that is something you created.  If it is an AR site that you are needing to get in you might want to create a general post asking for help from AR administrators, but many systems you have to start over if they dont' have a 'clue word/phrase' that jogs your memory.

I've been there and know your frustration.

best of luck...

Marcy...

I hear ya!  The technology world is changing as we speak...now I'm trying to figure out whether twitter is something i need to do, facebook and other social networks.  so I'm still not out of the woods yet.  But don't do what I did...i was totally on blogging for the first six weeks then life got in the way and I peetered out (not sure if that's how you spell it).  I need to commit to at least 2 blogs a week and I haven't done that.  So I'm still learning how to schedule my time to keep blogging up.  So hang in there and welcome to the blogosphere!

susan,

Losing your post is the most frustrating thing 'cause you know it's your own fault.  I was working on a long one last week and I realized I had worked for 45 minutes and hadn't saved it.  So i saved a draft really quickly and breathed a sigh of relief.  I am going to do my best not to let it happen again as it only takes 30 seconds or so to save the draft.

But yes it is comforting to know others have done it as well.  Hopefully though you only have to lose it once (or twice) and it finally registers.

Debbie,

the first month was the most overwhelming for sure!!!!!!!!!   I dont' know about you but when I get overwhelmed I sometimes seem almost frozen in place.  Well Active rain is like so many other new things you just START and a week or two in you feel kind of proud of yourself that you have made progress.  But I am still a bit overwhelmed on the SEO and how much there is to read in AR.  But there seems to be folks sharing things about everything you just need to spend time reading through the posts.

best of luck to you all....

For only being on AR for about 4 months, you sure are an advanced user.  I have read a lot of posts, but am having a hard time finding the time to implement some of the ideas and applications into my blog.  I'm too busy reading, learning and commenting to update my own blog.

Hi Troy,

I was out of town this week so getting back to my blogs.  I am definitely not an advanced user.  I need to get out there and catch up on new blogs and associated info.  I totally understand your comment of reading, learning and commenting and not having time to write them.  I'm at that point right now as well.  I have got to set aside time....i look around and wonder how many hours people spend online in AR or other networks...dang.

But i do believe in the value so I'm planning to get more diligent in marking a few hours a week to blogging.  Today though is catching up from being out of town without a computer.  So best of luck...set your goals and let me know how it goes.

Do you remember bursting those bubbles in wrapping paper? I used to love sitting there doing it. So came across this widget and decided that others might remember enjoying it as well. So if you feel like you want to scream...have at it. Pop a few bubbles in me! Makes me smile everytime!
