I am a website designer besides being a busienss broker and commercial real estate broker. I have this bad habit of criquing people's websites. Especially realtors. Below are 10 errors that I observe.

Disclaimer: I claim copyright on this article. ActiveRain is the first place that I publish this article. If you want to reblog and publish somewhere else, please refer back to this page.

  1. Build a website then never touches it. I saw some website "last updated 2005".
  2. Website is not Search Engine Optimized. I saw website that does not even have a title.
  3. Only put blatant self promotion articles there. A website is a true reflection of you and your service.
  4. Use one font for all the content in the whole website.
  5. The whole website is powered by Javascript. Remember many people disable Javascript.
  6. The whole website is powered by Flash. Very bad idea.
  7. The website looks different under different browsers: IE or firefox.
  8. Each page has different design. A website should be consistent in design.
  9. The website looks the same with a million and 1 other websites.
  10. Some people donot even have a website.

This list can go on and on but I believe the above are some most common errors that I observed so far.

Hey Huiting, you are correct, the list can go on and on.  I am a home inspector but marketing is marketing and an outdated or lacking website does pose a problem for prospective buyers and sellers.  My pet peeve however is agents that will not post their cell phone or a phone number other than the office phone... you call the office and they say "can I page them for you."  Sure, and then you are handcuffed for perhaps the next hour till the agent  decides or is free to call you back.  They do this presumably to screen undesirable calls but in the process hand cuff anyone that wants to speak with them.  My suggestion, publish the cell phone number, open access.  If someone is wasting your time tell them, it's not really a rude or time consuming process.  If you really have a problem dealing with sales people at all... perhaps you are in the wrong business.
