"When you try to be everything to everyone, you fail to address the specific needs of anyone"

If there were ever a quote that should be every agents' motto, this is probably it:

"When you try to be everything to everyone, you fail to address the specific needs of anyone"

IMO, one of the main reasons for the high percentage of failure in this business is the lack of focus most agents employ.  An article I recently read @ RISmedia addressed this very topic, and did so quite well.

I'd encourage each and every agent to think today about who your target market is, and begin to devote 110% of everything you have to strictly that market.

If you get leads on business that doesn't fit that target market, refer it (easy money) so you can concentrate your time and efforts on what you're best at.  You'll find that your effectiveness is compounded with less work than it takes to use the broadbrush approach in your business, and in the end you'll make more money, serving more clients, as you become known for being a true expert at your targeted market.

Who wants to hire someone who's mediocre at many things and master of none?

Ryan,

Great quote. This is a great message to follow as a real estate agent. I feel specializing is more effective and ultimately delivers your clients better results.

I just learned a lesson from this  quote. I currently run my own company. I also do business brokerage, commercial RE and run a tech team. What I know is that I cannot do everything. Not only I cannot be expert on everything but I do not have the time to do that.

Ryan, I thoroughly agree with your article. It is extremely difficult to spread yourself too thin. You cant be everyone to everyone. Cheers, Keith

Its VERY easy to be lured by the scent of more money into areas not aligned with your business area/focus.  The short-term earning of the dollar can easily distract one from the primary target.  Good post!

Keith - It's quite easy to spread yourself to thin, then you look up and you're getting nothing done, right? Thanks for joining in.

Sassy - Isn't that the truth! It's always hard to refer the business that doesn't fit your plan, but ultimately it gives you more time to be effective. Thanks for your comment.
