Hixson will open its new middle school in January. The new school is just next door to the Hixson High School.

Hixson is a located in Hamilton County north of down town Chattanooga. It is an unincorporated suburb of Chattanooga.
Hixson is supported by Hixson Elementary, Big Ridge Elementary, Ganns Middle Valley Elementary Schools and Hixson Middle School, Loftis Middle School and Hixson High School. The high school mascot name is the Wildcats.
Hixson is named for one of the pioneering families who had been among the earliest settlers in the area who came from North Carolina in the 17th century. The community had been known as Lakeside after a lake near the Hixson home. The railroad named the station there Lookout, but it was soon changed to Hixson Station to avoid confusion with the station at Lookout Mountain.
