Good-Bye Ace! You are remembered...

I don't recall a holiday weekend that I just hung around and basically "thought about stuff".  What I'm about to write is not easy for me.  But I am dawdling. The real purpose of this blog is not so much to talk about me or my real estate business as to remember someone very dear to me who committed suicide.

This weekend I decided to pay homage to my cousin, Ace, who took his life on Labor Day three years ago. To this day our family does not know exactly why; we have an idea of the excrutiating pain he must have been in, to have committed this unspeakable act.  Married to a wonderful lady for many years, he seemed to have a life that most of us would envy.  Nice condo on the outskirts of Boston, worked at the same place for over 20 years, had 2 cats, a loving family and a pretty wife. He was warm, affectionate and very generous; he had a funky sense of humor and a sharp wit.

But all was not perfect.  He obviously had issues, that he may or may not have divulged to anyone who could have made a difference.  Ace did call his brother on the west coast to tell him what he was planning to do - dive off a bridge.  But it was too late.  Being Labor Day, the traffic between Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts off 95 was jam-packed with cars.

From eye witness reports, he easily scaled the bridge railing and jumped.  It was over in a minute.  Some spectators and people sitting in traffic were upset that this incident caused more traffic delays. When my brother called me with the news, I was shocked.  He would have been one of the last people I would have thought to be a candidate for suicide.  So with memories of better times, I say a silent prayer for his family.  Good-bye Ace on this Labor Day - may God be with you!

Hi Rose:

I applaud you for having the courage to post this story, and I am very sorry for the loss you and your family experienced.   I hope your brother is resting in peace now.
