I was doing a little painting today and thought I would pass along a little trick that I do to all new paint cans that I open. It only takes a minute and saves a lot of aggravation. Who hasn't tried to open a paint can that was previously opened after sitting a long time and the can's lid is glued shut with old paint? All you do is take a large nail and punch holes around the bottom lip of the can about one inch apart. This way, the paint that gets in the can's lip will simply drip back into the can...viola! No more stuck lids!

Seems too simple... won't the paint dry up in an exposed can? Maybe I'm too tired and not catching on...

You are so slick...I love it, when I paint I get more on me and the floor, this is brilliant...something so simple... :)

Mott, the holes are punched in the inside lip of the can. Then paint then drips back into the can. Thats where the paint always gathers. When the lid is put back on, the holes are covered up....but yes it is very simple, I saw my grandad do this when I was small and always stuck with me.

Looks too easy doesn't it?  You could buy one of new expensive paint cans but it seems better your way.

Thanks for sharing this great tip.  I'm going to be doing quite a bit of interior painting this fall and I'm definitely going to use your advice.

Kent - Interesting ... my hubby likes to make sure there is some paint in the rim ... he says it helps make a seal if the rim was damaged on opening it.

Kathy, not a bad idea....doing this would allow you to still apply paint around opening to seal, but would keep so much from staying in the bottom of the inner lip as not to "glue" the lid closed.

Thanks,

Kent

Kent, interesting. Thanks for the tip, I'm assuming the lid seals the holes after being reinstalled.
