List Your Business in Google Maps!

By
Real Estate Technology with Zillow

Ever used Google Maps? It's very cool. You can look up just about anything. Who knows how those wizards at Google get all that information and stuff it all into Google Maps.  Eventually, when Google takes over the world, every possible business will be listed in Google maps.

But for now, there's a way you can help get YOUR BUSINESS to show up in Google map queries!  Not only will doing this "place you on the map" it's a great way to get YOUR WEBSITE URL into the Google search engines.

Our Google Maps entry looks like this:

Notice, there is our URL, right there in Google Maps. So even if no one ever goes to Maps to search for us, we managed to get our link into the Googleplex.

How do you do this? It's quite simple actually...  Go to Google's Local Business Center and complete the form. You'll need a Google account to do this (but you *really* should have one anyway. Go here if you don't).

Google verifies ALL entries into Google Maps. A couple of weeks after you sign up, you'll get a postcard in the mail with instructions on verifying your Maps entry. Follow these instructions and whalla! you can now be found in Google Maps!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Consult your broker prior to doing this as laws vary from state to state and what you can (or can't) say in your Google Maps entry may be dictated by local and state laws and regulations.

It's likely that most people won't find a real estate agent by searching Google Maps. But it never hurts to get into Google everywhere you can. I can't prove it, but I'm virtually certain our submission to Google Maps helped us rank higher for the coveted "You Town Real Estate" search term.  It's free, it's easy and it certainly can't hurt.

Thanks for the great idea. I'll check with my Broker first, though. They are not as into the internet as I am.

I signed up a few months ago, am now listed on Google maps, though I never received a postcard from them.  However, unlike you, one thing I chose not to include is my e-mail address in order to prevent more spam.

Google maps is a great tool. With an account, you can sign up to use their API and put custom maps on your site. Here is an example from mine. The red lines are added using javascript. I hope to have some custom markers on the map shortly. Maybe I'll explain it all in a blog once I figure it all out.

Thank you for the link. I am embarrassed to say that I did not know of such availability. I have warned my husband and partner Mike that if he throws anything away fron Google, I'll do untold damage.....

Terry - nice custom map! I've got a Google Map API, but haven't sat down to learn it yet. (by the way, your search Fridley link under the map points to a page with an inactive WolfNet search...)

Leanne - I know what you mean about Spam. I already get so much of it, I decided to put that particular email address on Google Maps because I don't want someone who actually finds me there to not be able to email me. I use Thunderbird for an email client and it's pretty well trained to send 99% of my spam to a spam folder.

I signed up for this about 3 weeks ago, nothing yet.  It says it only lasts in the directory for 6 weeks and then you have to renew.  Did anyone have to renew?

I did this too, very cool and I'm one of the only individual agents  in my area doing this. Some of the big firms are there, but my experience is that many who search want an individual not a company whereas they get whatever agent happens to be on floor duty.  Now I'm not sure I've gotten anythign positive from it yet, but I know most of my clients are very tech savvy so IMO it is just one of those things I need to be ahead of the curve on. And I did get my postcard, and I haven't had to renew or anything yet...

Cool tip, thanks.  I had did the same thing with a listing on Yahoo, but its for the local index.  I has a map function as well, but you have to be a Yahoo! member (have an email acct) to list your business. Other members can then rate it. -Charles
