Ok I was raised good Southern girl and I learned a lot of valuable lessons from my mother.  I hope that I have instilled many of them in my own daughter.

A good Southern girl never leaves the house without a little lipgloss and clean undies.

A good Southern girl always uses her manners,(Thank you, please, yes sir, no ma'am) especially with people who are serving her...(like the people at a drive thru window or the checker at the store)

A good Southern girl knows there is a time and place for everything.

AND A good Southern girl never, ever discusses politics or religion with folks she doesn't know well.  While I was certainly raised to have my own opinions about these things (and trust me I do) I would never speak  them with people I don't know well because these are delicate issues that can make people upset and easily and quickly alienate them.

Here on AR I don't know any of you well enough to speak of these 2 topics because as a good southern girl it would simply be inappropriate.  Also as a Realtor I am in a business that is based upon giving good customer service and getting referrals and I wouldn't want to alienate anyone by discussing such personal issues in a public forum.

Earlier tonight I read a politically charged post and was fairly offended then it occurred to me that not all of us are raised 'good Southern girls' and maybe they just didn't know better.

All the Best!

Kathy,

Even among family and close friends religion and politics can rapidly disintegrate into a scream-fest. I for one would like to see more real estate and less vitriol but that's just my opinion.

This Good Southern Girl AGREES! I have some very strong beliefs and opinions but AR is not the place to share them BUT should you ever have a referral for Bryan or College Station Texas this Southern Girl will be glad to help!

Kathy, well stated. This not-so-good northern boy agrees with you wholeheartedly. I'm all for posting personal experiences and funny anecdotes, but this is not the forum for politicking.

Even though I've been transplanted in Seattle for 6 years now and married a Northerner (I'd never use the "Y" word except in the company of my darling husband) last year, I'm still very much a Good Southern Girl and I loved your post.

My Mother-in-law will be visiting from Ohio in a few weeks and while she and Brett may (and likely will) go round and round over politics, I'll just smile and look pretty.  I'm very lucky to have a MIL I adore, and I plan to keep it that way.

I think it should be ok just not in the way it is being done now. When people speak in absolutes and dont allow any room for a conversation to occur then it just becomes spam. No one likes spam. You need to be open minded and let people grow. If your candidate/idea is so great then just tell us why they are so great.

I for one take sides with you on the subject of delicate..... I have friends who become one sided with topics such as this and choose to keep my mouth quiet just because I don't like debates where there is NO open minded discussion.

I also believe it is MY opinion and MY choice to keep to myself online as well.

I just mentioned this to somebody. Those two topics I will not touch. And I too was quite shocked of some things that I have been reading (or skipping the reading) of the political blogs. ~Rita

She didn't have clean undies on either Kathy.

P.S.  Rita & Ferris... GIVE IT UP... quit spamming the board with messages for everyone to come post about Sarah Palin on your blog. 1. You can't even spell the name correctly. and 2.  No one wants to see or comment on your blog.

Kathy, I guess that I am just a Yankee boy, but I agree wholeheartedly with you on these topics, there is a time and a place, and here on Active Rain is niether!

Thanks Kathy. That reminds me what I did in the past. I do not discuss religion but I do discuss politics a lot. Now I know I should do something. Or rather, I should NOT do something. People are so subjective about politics and it is hard to come at a common ground.

I know, I know and you are right! But sometimes I read a stupid:) post and I can't help speak out!  I know I shouldn't but it's so hard!

Now I work with both sides of the political party and the discussion always seems to come up because it's a hot topic right now. Even my far, far lefters still use me because they like ME. I treat everyone the same even if I don't agree with their politics. But you are still right:)

Kathy, Somethings are best kept to ones self! I must agree that this is not a political blog spot but I guess I am free to pass it up and not read it. Actually that is exactly what I do, move on to  another post.

Wow!  I just took a quick look at the last commented blogs & about a quarter of them were politically charged.  I guess there's not as much 'good Southern girl' in folks as I had hoped for.

Kathy, love this post :)

I can't help but respond on occassion but you won't be seeing partisan politics on my blog.  You may see debate about proposed legislation or passed and signed bills.

Renee, I think it's very important for us to open up dialog about proposed legislation and bills. It's the partisan politics that are most likely to offend, alienate  and divide us from our buyers and sellers.

I'll offer a differing opinion.  I very much enjoy reading political discussions here on AR; I often learn new things, or discover new ways of looking at things, even if I don't necessarily change my views....

The key is people need to debate the merits of the ideas/issues and refrain from any kind of personal attack or name calling.  You treat people with courtesy and respect, whether or not you agree with their ideas.  That kinda of fits with the Southern Girl thing, right?

And I also think it's OK if clients see you involved in these discussions.  If you are handling differing opinions with tact and diplomacy, I think it speaks well to your skill as a negotiator.

Unfortunately politics will directly influence our business.  If one candidate is pro-business and does not want to increase taxes we need to get the word out.  If another candidates wants to raise taxes on the sale of a home we also need to get the word out.  There is a distinction between mud slinging, character bashing, and discussion...and that - most adults know how to behave.

Debating is a fun thing as long as it does not get personal.  I have many a friend that are opposites of my beliefs.  Hell, my wife is different than I am.  Its just knowing when to agree to disagree and not get the last word in and move on.

I consider my father in law one of my best friends.  I know him well enough that we CAN NOT talk politics.  We simply agreed to bet a beer on the election (The WINNER buys) and moved on.  We have other stuff to talk about.

I do enjoy a lively debate,  I also see the good and bad in every candidate.  I like to read (and occasionaly comment) on the blogs.  There have been some that offended my beliefs and I knew I had no chance in winning the debate, so I chose not to comment.  Thats cool also, I still visit their other blogs. I've also been made to deeper research items that questioned my position.

Isn't this a group of professionals blogging about Real Estate??  I thought so!  Now, don't get me wrong - I'm a G.R.I.T.S. (Girls Raised In the South) girl to the bone, BUT when I believe strongly in something, I can spit fire with the best of them.  HOWEVER, I did have good raising and I know the time and place appropriate.  That's good blogging, girl!

Kathy, I agree even though I was born and raised in NY.  I moved south 18 years ago, and now am a hybrid New Yorker and Georgia girl.  I keep my politics to myself and my family.  Even in my family we have different political views. Oh, maybe my Dad will learn one day. :)  I wouldn't want to alienate any potential client.  They are hiring me for my real estate knowledge, no reason to share my political views.

I only speak of politics and religion with people I choose to irritate.  Now this may sound like a harsh comment but it's not.  I have a circle of friends and there are a couple I enjoy irritating now and then and, of course, we have different views on religion and politics.  For the most part I don't get into political discussions with others (they have to make up their own minds) nor do I get into discussions on matters of religion (I feel that's something private).  But I do like to irritate a couple of my friends... and I have come to realize they like to do the same to me.
