Recently I forgot to save a blog I was writing in draft as I went along, I opened another window (or so I thought) to find a blog that I wanted to highlight in my post.  Well, you guessed it, I went back and my post was gone.  (Now I know Brad Andersohn warned me this was going to happen...)

So from here on out I am going to be more diligent (or as was suggested to me, I will write long posts in WORD first so I don't lose them.). so hopefully I learned my lesson in a fairly painless way...though I will go on record saying that my first post was quite a bit better than the one I ended up rewriting...

Well I was irritated of course...but my thoughts immediately went back to a story I heard when I lived in Venezuela...believe me it always keeps me from getting too upset in a situation like this as I realize it could be worse.

I lived in Caracas for four years and had a friend who was a college professor there.  She did research and used mice for her studies.  She had them in three or four different groups, you know, control groups etc so should could compare what was happening, how their cells were changing or not changing etc.

Well the group had to be moved to another building and after all was said and done...you guessed it, the mover, to simplify the move, combined all of the mice in one cage for transport!

She was devastated.  Three full years of research was gone.  When she was relating the story to me a year had passed since "the incident" but you could still tell what the loss meant to her, both personally and professionally.

So, yes I lost 20 minutes of typing, but hey...it could have been a lot worse.

Celeste, use Firefox and you should then be able to use the "Go Back" button and it will be there. They say Firefox is the best browser for blogging. It's very frustrating to loose your work!

Celeste,

Not to worry I know the feeling and I remember back when I was in college and we were doing programing in COBAL.  Well since we were a state school our computers were linked to the main state school in Columbia, SC.  So whenever USC took down it's mainframe everyone went down.  These little problems usually happened at night.  So one night when I am just about finished after spending four hours pounding out a program for class all of a sudden poof.  The terminal goes dark.  So yes I lost it all.  After that I was hitting save after every few lines of code.

Celeste,

Been there, done that and I can't tell you how many times!  Like yourself, I've learned to write everything in Word and then copy and paste it to my blog.

By the way, I've also had occasions when I've posted a lengthy comment on a post only to lose it when I went to submit it (total computer 'glitch').  I guess it served me right for 'saying' too much!

The first one is always better than the one you have to "REDO."  MAKE SURE TO SAVE SAVE SAVE!

We only need to learn that lesson once. And, we all learn it early on in our activerain experiences.

It happens to all of us sooner or later. I have learned to use the save button and my external hard drive to back up my PC the hard way!

Great positive attitude.  3 years down the drain for the mice.  sheesh.  20 minutes seems laughable now.

Larry...oh those were the days...I remember all nighters in the computer center at Purdue University...this shows my age...we were doing the boxes/stacks of computer cards, but I think it was FORTRAN not COBAL...my big thing was I'd wait for several hours only to find I had a Doo Loop of somekind and would have to find and correct my error and then resubmit.

I use Word to write all my drafts.  I can save it to file and go back when I want to and finish/edit it before posting.

I really think this is an issue that COULD be addressed by Active Rain. If they would provide us an area to save drafts and unfinished blogs, then we could save them there, and not have to worry about losing them.... how bout it AR?

been there, done that, still don't save as I go along.  I do open several windows and write in one, research in another, pull pictures from a 3rd etc......  My bigest problem is not confusing the spell check with the return back icon.  I do make myself stop, pause and look before I just scroll up and click.  So far I have done it twice once in AR and once on my quiltblog.  be good  cheryl

Kevin,.. You CAN save them in Active Rain.  You just have to remember to do it.  (Brad Andersohn in of his newbie blogs mentioned it or I wouldn't know).  It's on the bottom left where it is public, private etc...there is an option for DRAFT.  So you can save it as you go along.  I just got cockie/lazy etc I guess and I didn't feel the need to save it that time.  So I had no excuse...but it could have been worse...

Laura...did you lose everything on your computer???  i would hate to think that happened to someone...

it's like losing my cell phone...i can't remember any one's number any more 'cause of speed dial.  My sync up isn't working...long story...but anyway...i know what you mean

I think i read in a blog somewhere that i bookmarked about an easy backup system...i have a complicated on so supposedly i'm protected if something bad happened, but the one they recommended seemed sooo easy.  i think it was $5/month.

I need to go back and look into that.

Hey Celeste, WOW, I think we have all been there!! I KNOW that I have MORE than once - I am sorry to admit.. I too, have had the same thing happen when commenting.. Thanks for the reminder again to SAVE !  God bless,

Celeste - I agree with Jeanean, use Firefox and that won't happen again. Also save your posts frequesntly in Draft mode.  I only use word to "Backup" my posts, not to write them. I'm so sorry this happened to you, trust me, I know the feeling, it happened to me, but only once!  :-))

Okay, I am heading out but next chance I get I will look up this...firefox...i keep hearing about and see if I can do something with it...see don't even know if you buy it, download, what it replaces etc...so never a day goes by that I am not learning something on AR...if it's like anything else so far I've checked out...i'm sure I'll wonder how I lived without it for this long.   thanks all...

Do you remember bursting those bubbles in wrapping paper? I used to love sitting there doing it. So came across this widget and decided that others might remember enjoying it as well. So if you feel like you want to scream...have at it. Pop a few bubbles in me! Makes me smile everytime!
