What is an associate (in AR)?

Just a quick question...can someone give me a brief answer to the question what is an associate? I've been in AR almost a month but haven't figured this one out and haven't seen it written any where.

Merely someone who you might find useful.

plus someone you have added to your "associates" tags, i believe.

You better find out because I just added you as my associate.

I am parked here so that I can also hear these answers! Wondering if you subscribe to a blog, does that make them an assoicate automatically??? A little confusing to me, too!
