I have been thinking of taking my business to the next level and I don't know if coaching is the way to go.  I know that any system or program must be followed and coaching provides the accountability that's needed to stay on track.  You can have the best plan in the world but it is worthless if you don't follow it.  This is true for anything including weight loss, real estate, etc.

If you have or are involved with or are being coached... DOES IT WORK?

My broker has a coach and she is convinced it helps her to stay at the top

David, I heard a coach say this once "If my personal trainer does not knock on my door at 5:00 in the morning I am not jogging, but when he shows up I get up and run."  A coach is there to support and encourage you.  The bottom line is it is up to you to do the work.  The problem is that some people don't know what or when to do certain things.  A coach narrows your focus and puts you on the track.  Remember, there is no magic system.  You have to develop something that works for you and a coach will help you achieve it.

I have thought about becoming a coach a lot the last several weeks.  I am actually meeting my first client tonight.  He is not in the Real Estate industry but his goal is become one of the 20 most powerful people in Tennessee in the next 2 years.  In his situation this is very achievable and I plan to help him achieve that goal.  The thing is he realized he needed help and coaching made sense to him.

There are several people in my office that are being coached and they are top producers.  So it must be working for them.

I believe that coaches help improve your performance if (like anything) they do quality work and hold the coachee accountable.  The other critical part of the equation is that the coachee has to want to take hard direction from and be accountable to the coach.  Under those circumstances it can be a real WIN-WIN.

The key is you have to be coachable.

i have been in real estate for 25 years and successfully "coached" myself to being in the top 1% in the country : ask yourself what are your goals and dreams and what is the biggest problem in achieving them? that is the beginning of good coaching: yes, it absolutely works! please contact me if you need help...glad to do an introductory discovery experience. all the best, diana

For me, David, Coaching is about FOCUS.  It's so easy to get caught up in which path to take that you forget that you have to start on the journey down one of the paths or you get nowhere.

For a coach that can focus you on a path that can work FOR YOU, I think that would be worth every penny!

This is so true.  It MUST be something you will be willing to follow and will work for you.  Anything will work if you do it.  If you don't do anything, you will succeed... as a failure.

I recently read a Will Rogers quote...  "You can be on the right track but if you just sit there you will get run over".  Coaching is great for some and not for others.  Some folks are self motivators others need inspiration.  Neither is wrong.

The thing about coaching is how to find a great coach. There is a group in the mortgage industry that is known as the "Mortgage Mafia" simply for the fact their basic coaching approach is quite good then when they have you they go from coaching to selling stuff you simply don't need. Like the mafia once you're in you may not be able to leave. "forgetaboutit"

There in lies the rub, at what point does the coach ie trusted advisor become a salesperson?

What I would suggest is have an accountablility partner and or group. I am a member of Master Mind, This is a small group of business people (no greater than six) who meet once a week. Its a diverse group. We have a Documentary Film Maker, CFP, Doctor, Watch Maker, Home Improvement Contractor and myself. Please note this is NOT a BNI approach.

Sometimes it's just talking about the weeks events in our lives other times it's discussing a problem one of us are having in business. What is nice about it is while the problem may not be directly related to their business they give a fresh outlook on it from a comsumers point of view.

But at the end of the day it's all about the "D"   D E S I R E. Your desire to (fill in the blank) must be greater than your desire to or not to (fill in the blank).

In your case - Your desire to (be the top agent in Katy) must be greater than your desire to or not to (be just another agent in Katy).

It's all about choices and as such I will leave you with this question.

Is your desire to ______ greater than your desire not to______?

Good Luck,

Paul

I used to be a coach many years ago. I work on the GOLD system:

  • Set your goals
  • Organize them. Some will have a greater priority than others, either because of desire of because of the time frame
  • List those goals. Physical make a list, or a wall chart, or anything visual so that you can see your progress.
  • Do them. That means get busy!
