Have You Visited Your Local Library Lately???

Have you visited your local public library lately? Long gone are the days of card catalogs and library marms telling you to hush! It is a wonderland of education and fun for youth and adults alike.

My wife has been telling me for months that things have changed...we started bringing the kids to storytime at our local library a few years ago. It was fun for the kids and we were able to check out books for the kids to read at home.

But did you know that the newer libraries (or the renovated ones) have rows and rows of computers to use for free (an hour at a time) and that they are connected to the Internet at smoking fast speeds?

How about the arts and crafts programs for kids that focus on reading and other important skills? There are even classes and meetings for adults. I am going to teach a few classes at the one in Riverside called the Woodcrest Community Library.

My son, Dane, is pictured above playing online at one of the educational websites the library has bookmarked.

Its kind of pointless when you own your won laptop and home pc dont you think?

What a coincidence!We plan on going to the local library tonight! Since my significant other and I are both avid readers, we have come to realize that buying paperbacks in volume and re-reading old books has become tiresome. We figure it will take us nearly forever to blow through the library stock.

I just read an article about how more and more people are using their public libraries. They listed free internet access and more children's programs as important draws, but credited the economy and many people's lack of discretionary funds to the increase in library traffic. And I just went on my local library's website the other day to see if they had a movie I was looking for. They did, Blockbuster didn't. What more can you ask for?

I love going to the public library. The story times are great for young children and I like knowing that I can jump online at a local library when I am out of town. Thanks for the post.

Justin...I have a 3 laptops, two desktops, a server and an iPhone...in fact...this original post was posted from my iPhone while at the library...but the computer access is great! I was checking out some investment properties after going to lunch and did not have my laptop. I was listening to a conference call so I did not want to surf the internet from my phone, and I was 2 blocks from the library.

I pulled in, jumped on a computer, pulled up 2 properties on MLS and got the property profiles for them as well as the combo codes, and 30 minutes later I bought an investment property.

Turns out two other bids came in after mine was accepted. If I had waited to get home or to my office I would have missed the deal. The library can be accounted for helping me make about $20k on one deal!

Now I know you will probably say that my situation was unique...but if you do not use all of the resources you have at your disposal you are crazy my friend! Those who succeed in life always are open to new ideas, and will always use a resourse...especially when it is truely free!

Heck...as a taxpayer the library is mine. I am gonna use it!

I use the library all the time. I get books on tapes to listen while driving my car to notary assignments.

The Internet library on Chicago Ave is fabulous and is constantly busy. I live near by and in there all the time.

I was just at the library a month ago to take my defensive driving class and saw the new happenings at the library. Gone are the card catalogs and everything are computerized. This is real progress!

They still have those things?! I haven't been to the library in forever. Hmmm, maybe this weekend.

What I like about the library, is the fact I can take my laptop in, connect to their network, and pull up all kinds of genealogy records via Ancestry.com. You are right - the library of today, is something we could have even imagined a couple decades ago.
