What, just a short time ago, was a lush green lawn has turned into a bed of golden birch and aspen leaves. I love the colors of fall but I'm just not sure I'm ready to usher in another fall/winter season just yet. Where the hell is Al Bore-Gore and global warming when I need it?

As they always are, the summer of 2008 was filled with family, good friends and memories that will last a lifetime... or until senility sets in, which for those of you who know me could be any day now.

All told there were 33 guests checked into Hotel Clifton this summer. Not a week went by from the first of May through the middle of August that we didn't have at least two or three couples roaming around. It's the same scene with somewhat different faces every year... and we wouldn't have it any other way. We love showing off Alaska to friends for the first time and old pals coming back year after year to hit the hot fishing spots or just bask in the vast frontier that is Alaska.

We sent our last house guests home not quite two weeks ago and decided it was our time. We made it as far south as Seward before the AR Posse tracked us down. Our very own Stapler Queen called to make sure we hadn't dropped off the edge of the earth. We hadn't... trust me, you would have heard the thud when I hit the bottom.

Our first stop was Portage Glacier, roughly 60 miles south of Anchorage on Turnagain Arm. While the glacier has retreated around the valley (and out of sight) in the last twenty years, it's still a tranquil spot. We spent several days camped at the base of a very tall snow covered mountain at Williwaw Campground. The sites are tight and with the coach slides extended we looked like a fat kid stuffed in too-tight corduroys. The stunning views of a hanging glacier out our front window more than make up for the small site, though next year I will listen to the boss and reserve a double site. Ssshh... don't tell her I said that.

We hiked beside and on a glacier, watched salmon spawning by the hundreds, encountered a very large, though huggable looking grizzly bear, explored the fascinating Indian Creek Mine and ate the first of many, many roasted marshmallows. Kathy almost had me convinced to ride the tram at Aleyska until I read the plaque on the wall that said the terminal was a 7 minute, 2,300+ foot, straight-up ride to the top. No damn thank you. There's not enough scotch on planet earth to get me on that contraption. So, I strolled the gardens while evil Knievel-ette rode to the top... alone. About 30 minutes later she calls to tell me to get my butt on the tram... "we're going paragliding." Now, that's just not even remotely funny. "Are you out of your &&(@$#$ mind?" I asked. Click. Power off. End of story.

We said goodbye to Portage and headed south to Cooper Landing and some of the best salmon fishing on earth. This late in the season most of the terrorists tourists had gone and it was mostly locals. If you can put up with fishing next to bears and some life changing cold water, then this is the place to be. The week before we arrived two people were mauled by a rather cranky bear at the Kenai Princess Lodge. Talk about vacation stories. ;) We were parked on Kenai Lake and each of the three mornings we were there we found very fresh (think steaming) bear scat on the beach not 30 feet from the motorhome.

From Cooper Landing we tooled down the Seward Highway, which passes through mountain plateaus and valley's that after 30 years still take my breath away, to the village of Seward on the coast of Alaska. We followed whales and sea lions across the gulf of Alaska, took a beautiful 49' Beneteau out for the afternoon, drank several bottles of merlot with the friendly Yankees parked next door and ate some of the most mouth watering salmon this side of my kitchen.

Our last stop before heading the few remaining miles home was Denali National Park. It's been a number of years since we've been back into the park in the fall. The summer months are packed with tourists but the colors that were on display on this trip were nothing short of spectacular. After getting settled we decided to drive up the 17 mile park road and look for wildlife. Buses and private vehicles regularly stop in the middle of the road or off to the side if a critter is spotted. We happened upon one such grouping of stalled vehicles who were trying to find a bear that had been reported wandering just off the road. As we stood there with cameras at the ready we noticed a large white wolf stroll across the road and stop for a few seconds to check out the commotion. A few more miles up the road we found two moose feeding and a plump black bear waddling along the road.

14 days, 1,300 miles and I'm ready to go again. I'm thinking a long road trip culminating in a backyard RV get together with Mandy and Big Daddy in Tx sounds like a great away to spend the winter. Mandy, say the word and we'll pack the Goose and head south. Btw, reservations for the 2009 summer season are now being taken. :) Here are a few photo's from the trip... enjoy!

Jesse,

Glad that your hotel was full all summer and here I was thinking that I would make a run up there but not now.  Darn the luck.  BTW, love the pics sir.

Beautiful photos Jesse. I'm starting to be a believer in global warming when the cold weather seems to stay away too much each year. I don't know how you handle that hotel Clifton with 33 guests. What an undertaking that is and a credit to you and Kathy and your hospitality.

Jesse, not only did you have a busy summer, but it looks like you visited some very beautiful parts of your Alaska. The photos are absolutely beautiful. Love the lake and the glacier one, especially, but they are all spectacular. ;-)

JESSE, It looks like a fun time at the Hotel Clifton.  My husband is getting ready to come there again.  He is helping a buddy build a house.  I'm actually THE ONLY ONE in my family who has not been there.  Someday!!!

Great pictures jesse. What kind of camera and lens do you use and where were you standing relative to those bears (gasp).

Bubba - I have to agree with you there... but it beats traffic, high crime and snakes.  Damn, I hate those things.

Adam - We hit just about every hot spot we could think of without actually burning the wheels off the MH.  Thanks for the compliments, btw.  I am purely an amateur, but I do love playing photographer.

Laura - Ain't it the truth.  There's already a lot of frost on the pumpkin every morning.  Yikes.  Pretty soon it will be all white, which is beautiful in it's own way.

Mike - Thanks... These are some of my favorites.... and yes, I agree. Sarah knocked 'em out last night.

Richard
- I took just shy of 2,400 pictures in 14 days. haha.  I bought an 8 Gig card, so I had room for another 2,700 shots or so.  Does that mean I get to go back on vacation?  Thanks for the compliments... having knock dead scenery helps a lot.

Mara - You're welcome. Thanks for stopping by.

Paddy - You should definitely make the trip.  We'll make room at the inn for you!  It's really more beautiful than my photo's can show.

Mel
- Hiya kiddo!  Congratulations on striking out on your own.  I'm looking forward to great reports!  That bear does look awful cuddly, but he was invading my comfort zone a little.  They're big, but can move like lightening.

Russ - Everyone needs to see it at least once.  I've been all over the world and it's one of the most beautiful places I know.

Jason - Thanks.. these pictures don't do them justice.  They are truly majestic in person... and a little scary when you're too close.

Audrey - Come on up.  We'll make room.  Paddy can have the room at the end of the hall, you can take one of the upstairs guest rooms. Heck, we'll have an AR get together.

Kathy - At our closest point we were probably no more then 150' from the grizzly.  I had one hand on the shutter button and one hand on the .44 on my hip.

Kelly - The bears will definitely get your attention... as will the wolf.  The whales... man, they're amazing.

Sharon - We're very blessed to call Alaska home.  Thanks!

Jer - No HBO, but there are 300+/- other channels you can surf through.  I know where the news channels, the history channel, Discovery and one or two others are.  Kathy's the tv junkie in the house.

Cynthia - The season runs from March or April (depending on the weather) through September.  Each month has something different going on so come up anytime.  We were kinda slacking off... thanks to a brilliant admin.  It sort of made me want to take a much longer sabbatical.

Pam - Heck, you're practically just down the street.  Pack your bags and come for a visit.  We've got all sorts of stuff to keep you entertained. Where were your sisters?  Oh, and keep the stapler queen in line?  No, no, no... I'm just here to keep her in goose. :)

Jon - We do carry a gun with us.  Depending on where we're going we carry a .44 and a .416.  I don't like to have to shoot at something twice.  It needs to stop the first go around.  Most of these were taken with my new Canon 40D and a 500mm f4/L IS prime.  I'm trying to convince Kathy I 'need' the 600mm L.  So far she's not falling for it.

Mandy - Sounds good.  There's always room for our southern twins.  I have no doubt the Hall plantation is a jumpin’ place what with all the goose, staplers and free-range Escalades running around.

Suzi - You're welcome!  Thanks for stopping by.

Mana - Alright, my room is ready.  If we time this right we could leave when the snow falls and hit our AR buddies up from coast to coast.  Now that would be one heck of a trip.

Lynda - You're on.  You can go up and paraglide with Kathy while the heights impared folks stay attached to terra firma.  The bear was about 150' away at our closest and a couple hundred yards when he was strolling away.

Doreen - Thanks... it's easy to do when Mother Nature lays it out like she did.

Susan Darlin' - .... thanks :)  You would have had a blast.  We always travel with lots of wine and there are heated floors in the MH.  Pack your bags and be ready to head south around November.  It's gonna be cold as hell up here by then.  I'll forgive ya for telling the boss about the double site... she knew she was right the minute we got there and I worked for 15 minutes to get the MH squeezed into the space.  It was comical if I do say so myself.

Lori - At one time I wanted to be a traveling photo journalist.  If I could get the chips in place we would do it in a second.

Don - There's always room at the inn for friends.  When we run out of guest rooms in the house, we move into the MH and give the guests our room. :)  You're welcome anytime my friend.

April - Thank you!  I'm glad you liked them.

Teri - Thanks... Mother Nature certainly gave us plenty of beauty to photograph, that's for sure.

Marchel
- The heck with being left at home. You need to come up with him.  Think of the fun you would have.  :)

Castellum - I was using a Canon 40D with a 500mm Canon L series lens.  It's a dynamite combination.

Can't beat steaming bear pooh first thing in the morning.

Now about this work thing.  I vaguely remember it.  Am I supposed to be doing more of it?  That just doesn't seem right.

Thanks Debbie!  No punishment?  Whew!  :)  Kathy has not quite caught the blogging but yet.  She still shakes her head as I sit in the den and peck away on this little box.  haha

Katerina - You and Nestor are welcome anytime.  If there's a room open, you guys can have it.  We got the close up pictures by being a little too close to them for good sense... and a really good telephoto lens.

Virginia - Ok, your turn next.  Where ya going?  Make it somewhere fun!  I got lots of bear shots... thanks to a large telephoto lens. :)

I know where I'm going for my next evacuation/vacation and I don't need any mints on my pillow, either.  I do, however, require that my feet stay on the ground (sorry Kathy!) and that the bears remain at a respectable distance.  Can you handle that and the goose too?  :)

Those photos are postcard quality gorgeous, Jesse! My husband wants to go to Iceland next summer, but I'd really like to see Alaska. I suspect he's going to win because I picked our last vacation spot. Truly beautiful country you live in.

And it's it weird that as soon as September rolls around, even the air feels different? The other day I walked into my back yard and noticed some of the leaves on the maple tree were turning brown, and other vegetation seemed to be drying up, despite my constant watering. It took a while before I figured out it's because September has arrived. We don't have the dramatic change in scenery, of course, that you do, and our temperatures are still hovering near 100.

I see you have a new photo, too, Jesse. Nice!
