Why didn't I do this sooner?

This semester I decided to join College Republicans. About 80% of my friends are die hard liberals (which is fine- I enjoy having friends with different viewpoints), so I decided it was high time I had some friends who thought realistically about politics. Or at least on the important things... lower taxes, gun ownership, privatized health care... you know.

Fabulous.  It was great to see fellow classmates fired up about our country, how great it is and ready to do whatever it takes to get the right people in office.

Where had they been all my life?!

I'm tired of hearing people complain that college students are stupid when it comes to politics and how we don't care. What about that massive group of people who were protesting at the RNC that didn't even know who/what they were protesting against? [How can you NOT know what Biden and McCain look like? Do you live under a rock?] They weren't college students. We have students around the drillfield making sure campus is registered to vote. We're running phone banks, going door to door and have plans to be drumming support at the football games.

This October we'll be attending the Americans for Prosperity "Defending the American Dream Summit" in Crystal City [which by the way I'm excited to see because every real estate/property management class I've had has talked about this development]. I'm hoping we have a good turnout- there's about 287 members in our group. We'll be joining other CR groups from colleges around the state to show our support.

They're looking for an Event Coordinator to help direct the flood of volunteers we've had. I decided, hey, it's my it's my last year of college, I might as well live it up. We'll be going through interviews to see who's right for the job. I won't be too bummed if I don't get it, but that won't stop me from crossing my fingers!

I seem to hear a lot of people complaining about politics today, but most don't do a thing about it. I've talked to more people who say they don't like either candidate or feel they don't know enough about either of them, so they just won't vote. "Let others vote- mine isn't as important." It reminds me of that South Park episode where they have to vote for a new school mascot. Look it up on YouYube- I'm not a fan of South Park but this episode got it right. You don't have to go door to door, but the least you can do is vote.

I suppose I should get back to my finance class and pay attention....

Hey Kat,

Thanks for being involved - politics is not a spectator sport.

The world is run by those who show up!

Take care,    Laurie

I ditto what Hugh and Laurie said. Of course, all of the college students at VT are smarter than at the other schools especially UVA right? Just kidding:)

Kat - I volunteered for McCain/Palin last weekend and I'm so proud of you for joining this group of fine students. My youngest goes off to college next fall and I made her promise me that she won't suddenly forget who she is even if she has to endure what some professors will force down her throat!

Ken- I would dare say I like the dark side :)

Thanks Hugh!

I completely agree, Laurie. I feel like us students can really make an impact in this year's elections if we just put ourselves out there and get involved.

Tanya- That just might be me the truth! Jk :)

Simon- It's amazing what the professors here say. I think we're still mostly a conservative school because of where we're located and the fact that we're a big military/agriculture school. But for all the professors having to be "unbiased" they sure do a lot of sharing their opinions as fact. I find myself challenging their views from time to time. They're always surprised when someone challenges them with the facts.

Kat-

Good for you! Debate and an honest and open dialog about issues is what makes this such a great country to live in.

Hey Kat,

Great to hear about the involvement at school. I can't remember there being a republican or Democratic club when I was in college...... and my degree was in Political Science. LOL

That was some game! after the first half I wasn't sure we would get a W, but we came back in the second half. Let's just hope Tyrod is not hurt and expecting to play next week like he said after the game.
