First Baptist Church

Yesterday we looked at First Methodist Church in Searcy Arkansas.  It has been expanded and expanded and expanded til it covers about a block and a half.  But it still has the original building as we saw photos of it years ago and as it is now.

Today, I'm posting some of Paula's photos of the First Baptist Church which was completely torn down and a new one built.  That makes her old photos, made for a Girl Scout's photography project, more precious.  You know, this was a darned big building in the 40's, which is about the time she was snapping photos.  Bet the congregation thought they'd never have to build again. The Church was/is one block from the court square, considered downtown, and they too have bought up lots of surrounding land and stretch out a long distance.

The views are from the front and from the back.  Good work, Paula!  Thanks for sharing.

The new church is very pretty but I still like the old one.  I love historic buildings.

Thanks, Mary.  I like old buildings too.

Aren't we Searcians glad for Paula's Girl Scout project?  Just think of what we wouldn't have had, if she hadn't taken this on.

I recall hearing about a sermon delivered in this church in which the pastor, Bro. Vestal, from the pulpit,  called the names of two young men - members of the church - who hadn't been behaving in a manner the pastor thought they should.  My best friend belonged to this church, so I attended with her many times, but I wasn't there for this one.

Paula did good!!  As for the sermon, aren't you sorry you missed probably the only interesting one of the season!  Some churches call the sinner up in front of the congregation but I've never seen this happen.  I'd hate for it to be me!

Barbara  What a beautiful building and a shame it no longer exists.

The new church was my church and I was a member until 1999.

I do remember the leveled ruins of the old church for one reason. I was playing there with a friend, whose

name I forget, and he gave me a silver dollar. No, I didn't beat him up!

When I showed the coin to my grandparents they made me give it back.

The rubble was a great place to play. That must have been 1942.

There were 7 Baptist churches in Searcy when I was growing up. Most were splintered from the First Baptist.

When enough people disagreed with the pastor, they would start a new church.

Barbara, I need to send you a picture of Paula in her Girl Scout uniform when we get back.

Anthony, it was a nice building.  Thanks for stopping by.

Don, I'm confused.  What rubble did you play in.  What was the leveled ruins of the old church in 1942?  So this is the third church on the gounds?  I think things are the same.  Within the past few years about two new churches have come from the main one.  "Why can't we just get along?"  LOL  Thanks for commenting!
