Here's the next installment in our ongoing series "Making the Most of Your Localism Sponsored Communities."

(To access the first part in this series, go HERE. Or the 2nd part, go HERE)

So far, we've authored our community descriptions and started to populate our community with good, relevant local 'consumer-oriented' content.

The next step is going to require a bit more homework on your part, so be forewarned!

YOUR ACTIVERAIN PROFILE

The strategic value/importance of your ActiveRain Profile is an often time neglected and overlooked element of your participation here. Many times we simply rush through the initial steps of setting up our profile, and quickly move on to other more exciting things, leaving it in some kind of partially completed state of disarray.

Your profile will be accessed by potential clients. It may be the first or last impression you will have the opportunity of making. The content from your ActiveRain profile is transferred over and used to populate your Localism profile.

What does your profile say about you? What does it communicate? Is it aesthetically appealing, or dull and boring? Does it flow, or is it overly cluttered with annoying widgets, gidgets, and gadgets? Does it offer enough accurate, updated information about you, or is there too much self-promotion?

ActiveRain Poster Child and Community Builder, Brad Andersohn, created several really excellent tutorials on how to create a top-notch profile. You can find the first one HERE, with a link to the 2nd one at the bottom of the article. And there's another one HERE. Take your time in reviewing these tutorials and applying the steps that Brad provides. He also offers us some great examples of what other members have done with their profiles.

Realize that the formatting frames on Localism are different than what they are on ActiveRain. You may need to make a series of adjustments back and forth to get your Localism profile to display properly.

BUILD YOUR FIRST COMMUNITY BUSINESS BRIDGE

Sometime over the next several days, I want you to pay a visit to one of your local area businesses. It should be someplace that you yourself personally patronize and support by using their services or products. It could be a restaurant, coffee shop, cleaners, auto repair shop, grocery store, whatever. Be sure to take your handy digital camera with you.

I want you to introduce yourself to the owner/manager, and explain that you maintain a local community blogsite, and that you would like to feature/highlight their company with some free marketing exposure. Take some good quality pictures of the establishment, the employees (get their names), and as natural of a setting as you can. Find out as much pertinent information as you can about the history of the business, and a clear description of the services/products they provide. Get all their relevant location and contact info, including websites and email. Do they have a small printed menu you can take with you? You can scan the menu and embed a .pdf or .jpg file in your blog post.

Let them know that you will email a link to your community blogsite and blog post when you have it done. And, oh, by the way, I'm a licensed real estate agent, or Loan Officer, or Staging Professional, etc., here are some of my business cards if you or any of your friends should ever need my assistance....

On your next visit, you can talk to them about becoming an active participant on your community page, allowing for even greater positive exposure for their business.

Well, there ya go! Hopefully another helpful element/strategy that you can implement in effectively developing your sponsored community and attract potential business,.... so Stay Tuned!

(P.S. If you're a Twitter Bug, be sure to follow the new Localism Tweet!)

Since posts aren't being screened any more Localism is getting chocked down with advertisements for the better than sliced bread agents ads. At least in my area. Its a mess! Relevant what?

Thank you for taking the time to help us out with our Localism.  I was one too that went ahead and sponsered my town, put a few things on there and thought now what?  You gave me a lot of ideas about going out in town and talking to business owners and making new friends in the proccess.  This will take lots of time that I will have to fit in my very busy Real Estate life.  In the end it will pay off I think but I just can't see it yet.  I subscribed to your blog because I don't know how to save a post. lol I'm new.... Thanks again!

Thanks for the great tip.  Actually I'm working on a couple now which should be up in the next week.  I've been watching what is happening in a couple of the communities I sponsored and it just makes me smile.

Rich, excellent suggestion.

I hope to be up and running by this weekend and have asked the honorable Brad for a little help.

Expect something amazing (because I am trying to dazzle my boss) They are finally interested in my blogging because I have explained it will be going to a community blog. I have tried to explain to them that THEY cannot be the business I interview for the blog!!!!

LOL they still don't get it.

I stopped by my favorite Italian Gelato store this past week and am planning on writing a post about it today.  However, you've given me some great ideas on a few things I should add.

I also got going w/Twitter this morning! It's been on my to do list for a while.

Great suggestions here, Rich.Ihave done this sort of things in the past with a number of places, but need to do more. I have, without exception, found store owners, etc. very pleased that I would want to include them in my Localism posts. Finding the time to do it all remains the challenge.

Great information and suggestions.  I just purchased a new camera and tripod and have my first community outing planned this weekend to create a Localism post.  I have a great bookstore I frequest in another community I sponsor and like the suggestion of introducing myself as a local Realtor and leaving cards - so perfect timing for me to read this - Thanks.

Rich - you also meant to tell your readers that if they are Realtors they need to follow the NAR guildlines on these blogs.  They should idenify their brokerage, a logo will do the job and identify them selves as Realtors, the R logo does that and they should list the states that they have real estate licenses in.  They should also comply with any local regulations, usually found on their state association or local association web site.

'Think I bit off more than I can chew...  I see what's coming... selling ads on Localism.  When that happens, several of my areas will become available for someone else to purchase.

First f all. this is great idea that you propose like many of your ideas and posts, and I would be happy to do this, but I cannot even figure out how to see my own descriptions on Localism nor others. Perhaps these things are getting fixed while we speak, but right now it seems to be designed for aliens. There seems to be very little monitoring as acne ads with photos are appearing in my neighborhood of Miami. The site itself has no flow and no real user-friendly intrface that works! Excuse me for my persepctive here but iI have to be direct....it is a mess!

Rich- I definitely need to give my profile a revamp...it has some pictures, and some text, but I think adding a few links throughout will really help it.

BTW, since Paul is on sebatical, I thought I should ask for him, What is Localism?

Thanks Rich.  This is a good task to draw attention to both Localism and my blog.  It will also be a great way to increase my visibility in the community.  Now to make it a priority so that it actually gets done.  Now I'm going back to read all of the links.

Finally, someone on the right track.  Focus on your community first.  To add to this, you should show the Google results of such actions.  Once you show how many times you pull up on a top 10 list of a Google search, the sale to area businesses will be a slam dunk.........

Hey Rich,

Need some help here. I sponsored a city in Localism and I am diligent about adding photos and posting things that I think are relevant and interesting (not just listings and advertising which seems to be the the bulk of what everyone else sticks in there...grumble, grumble). I posted three articles over the last two days and none are showing up.

I check the little box that says it's going to go to Localism...but nothing...nada.

What gives???

Carol Clay

Note to members:

found some things out working with our profile.

1. do not use title tags. They may be good for SEO, but they'll become large white spaces in between your text on your localism profile

2. Don't use lines

3. Keep titles short

4. keep your pictures/images under 250px wide

5. don't place 3 pictures next to each other in one line or they'll stack up on top of each other on localism

6. do not center your profile

More when i find new things.
