Thanks everyone for all work in looking and reviewing posts.  Remember if you see something that does not belong, just send me an email.  Thanks!

Patricia has offered to try and put out a post every week (I think weekly, correct Pat?) highlighting posts from within the group.  This should help spur more posts - although this has been doing well with over 1200 posts in just over three weeks, it could spur even more!

Patricia has an idea about starting a contest (if members and posts to A2AR of course) to attract new members.  While our group has been growing in double digits every day, this could increase it even more.  What are your thoughts everyone?  Like the idea?  Is so what type of contest??

Below is my draft - PLEASE edit it - add or delete other things you think should be in here and I'll submit it to ActiveRain for approval

DRAFT FRAMEWORK FOR CONTEST

From now to the end of the year, have a weekly contest.  And then an overall contest winner for the entire contest time.  A weekly review will be done by Pat of all the wild, crazy, humorous, ways in which we are all Addicted to ActiveRain.  The stories can include video, but they should not have a preference over none-video.  The entries submitted MUST be submitted to the A2AR group, which would force the member to be a part of the group

Patricia can do the "top 10" or "top 15" or "top 20" (do we think we can guesstimate how many entries we might have each week???)  review of all the posts.  Then a panel of 5 judges can pick the 'top 3' for points on:

  1.  JUDGING POINTS ONLY -
    1. 10 points creativity
    2. 10 points content
    3. 10 points ingenuity
    4. 10 points how humorous
    5. 10 points popular (unique comments)
    6. and ???????????  Any other categories you can think of!!!!

The first weeks contest, ask two (2) AR or Addicted to Active Rain members NOT wanting to have any entries judged to be two of the judges, and the remaining 3 judges from our moderator group.

The following weeks ask in the order of 1st/2nd/3rd/etc place for the two additional judges.  So this will be a changing group each week.  If we cannot get two willing additional judges, go to previous weeks winners again asking from highest to lowest.  If they intend to submit additional entries for the week, they may not want to be a judge.  And fall back option to go back to up to 2 AR employees again for additional judge positions.

Weekly winner will get:  (Are these too high or too low????)

  1.
    1. 200 points - 1st Place
    2. 100 points - 2nd Place
    3. 50 points - 3rd Place
    4. Should we have 25 for 4th place??????

Overall contest winner will get:   (Are these too high or too low????)

  1.
    1. 1500 additional bonus points - 1st Place
    2. 750 additional bonus points - 2nd Place
    3. 250 additional bonus points - 3rd Place
    4. ** 100 additional bonus points - 4th Place (IF WE AWARD 4th & 5th Place)
    5. ** 50 additional bonus points - 5th Place (IF WE AWARD 4th & 5th Place)

I have two thoughts on an overall winner

  1.
    1. OPTION ONE
      • An entire new review of all the top 3 from each week.  Overall winner will be judged from 3 of our moderators, 1 AR employee, 3 other Addicted to ActiveRain members (MUST be in Addicted To Active Rain Group of course) - and I am thinking it would be pulled first from Pat's Weekly Review - IE: people that were in the top 10/15/20 - BUT not part of the weekly winning top 3.
    2. OPTION TWO
      • Just do a summation of weekly winning points (of the content/ingenuity/etc) and if there is a clear winner from that, for top 3 or 5 positions, and bring in additional judges if necessary to break a tie.

This is a general framework for the contest.  Please use

Italic for additions you propose to these guidelines

and for the delete, please use the line out feature so we can all see changes proposed

10 Comments on Contest Anyone? UPDATED with Contest Framework

Hi, guys!

Here's what I was thinking on the contest front.

When I tried to put together a "Week in Review" for the group, I noticed something major.  couple of things.  There are no posts here dealing with Active Rain addictions, and we all have funny stories about doing really goofy things while blogging.  It would be good, I think, to encourage that kind of post.  So we invite folks to share their most outrageous blogging moment - they time when they realized they might have issues, or when a family member stepped in with an intervention of some sort - or maybe an ultimatum?

Entries can be judged on humor, pathetic-ness and creativity.

I've never run a contest before, but the prizes can be points - we'll have to figure out who to call out to Bellvue to arrange for bonus points for the folks who send in entries and who win.

Hey Pat,

We can certainly focus on that, seems like a great idea.  We can feature the blog, plus have special blog recognizing the best entries.  Does AR give points for something like that??  If so, I'll ask Brad, he would be able to answer that, correct??

Robert / Bo / Lora, any thoughts??  Do you guys like the idea??  Any other potential contest focus?

Everyone - I think that Patricia has a great idea with the "Week in Review"!

Look up this Review that Elizabeth Nieves put out two days ago, she did a great job and I think something like this would really improve the group.

Title to her post is: Active Rain Week Review - 8/31/08 - 08-9/7/08

I didn't want to cut and paste the URL for certain reasons

Hi you guys!  I'm still pulling together this week's Week in Review and should have it posted later this morning.  Once we announce the contest, it should be a lot easier because there will be more addicted bloggers sharing their pathetic junkie stories.

We need a good contest introduction - Ron, want me to do a draft?  While the weekly points look fine, I think we need to award more to the overall winners.

A little update - I just went back to my this weeks weekly update, and I think we should wait until we have the contest going.  There are still very vew posts about blog addiction, and most of these are short and not fabulous.  I think we need to go for quality junkies.

To Pat thanks for the reply!  And everyone else here - please let me know your thoughts and input, I would really like input and guidance from everyone:

  • I put down 5 judges - I was thinking (could you smell the smoke) should we make it 3 and have two A2AR moderators instead of 3 each week, and then 1 AR person or other AR member in general?
  • Judging points - any other categories to judge in addition to the ones listed???
  • Pat thought we should raise the overall points, so I did a little.  Is that enough - or still more???  Should we have a 4th & 5th place point winner award??
  • On the weekly points should we have a 4th place??
  • Which option (OR YOUR OWN!!!!) should we have for picking overall winner?

I think that 2 folks in the group, 2 moderators and 1 AR person could do it.

Some of the contests have honorable mentions.

We also need instructions.

Want me to draft the contest notice?

Everyone, For starters I think the contest is a great idea. Who doesn't like free points! right? and since everyone is posting a new blog weekly or sometimes daily or even twice a day, it will encourage additional particiaption and memeber activity on the A2AR group.

However, rules without objectives are meaningless. So, I would like to ask the group for the other potential benefits of the contest and make sure that we all have an understanding of the objectives for the group and the contest before we create the rules for it.

I suggest we do this first. Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks

Bo

Hmmm, as far as contest, it would be the funny or crazy ways we are ADDICTED TO ACTIVE RAIN and the things we do to get our ten blogs per week or ten comments per day in.... I think anyway, correct Pat??    One objective, clearly is additional participation as well as greater membership in the group, with additional exposure of everyone in the group.  Plus, Pat would do the weekly review of all the posts (funny A2AR posts that is) and I have talked to Robert, I am going to try and put out a weekly review of all posts, just not sure I have enough time to always do that as this group has a lot of posts every week already.  I would like to highlight the best contributors to the group - not just the funnies that the contest will be focusing on.  One goal I have, is to have 2000 members by the end of the year.  If you notice, we have been growing at least 10 members every day, as I have continued to recruit every day.. I think the contest would also encourage additional postings as well as greater membership.  Sound good Bo???

Ron and Group:

Sorry for the delay-finally back among the living...I think. :-)

I like the ideas and of course the points as winnings would be a great incentive.

Also, maybe a suggestion to have each of the member invite 10 ( or more ) folks to also join the group? That could help w/ the yr end goal--recognition could be given to the member that brings in the most new members.....ok, is that an accounting nightmare????
